Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about the Cavalier King Charles is their heritage. The breed is descended from the Toy Spaniels that were popular with the aristocracy in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. They were favored by King Charles II who gave them his royal seal of approval which inspired their name. Today, the Cavalier King Charles is a beloved companion dog and often featured in films, photographs, and paintings. Not only that, they are known to be incredibly intelligent, loving dogs that are easy to train and incredibly patient when it comes to children.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are usually hypoallergenic and do not trigger allergic reactions in humans. However, the breed does shed which could cause mild reactions. Most allergic reactions are caused by dander and saliva, so if you are interested in adopting a Cavalier King Charles, it is still possible to do so as long as you take the necessary precautions to keep your home as dander and allergen free as possible. Vacuum regularly, groom your dog and, for extra protection, keep it out of your bedroom or any other areas of the house where allergies might be heightened.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically eat a well-balanced diet, with a mix of dry, wet, or raw kibble, and fresh meals with meat, fish, eggs, and vegetables. They may also enjoy treats from time to time. Meals should contain plenty of the essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients needed to keep them healthy and happy. As with all breeds of dogs, it is important to make sure they have access to plenty of fresh, clean water. Proper nutrition is key to maintaining healthy and long lives for these sweet pups.
Cavalier King Charles are considered relatively low-maintenance dogs compared to some other breeds, but they do need routine care and attention to stay healthy and happy. Grooming needs for the Cavalier King Charles include weekly brushing to prevent tangles and mats and monthly baths. Treats and higher-quality food can help prevent serious health issues, such as luxating patellas. Exercise is also important as it helps these active dogs stay well-rounded and agile. Barker Cavalier King Charles have to have a companion as they suffer separation anxiety if left alone too often.
An adult Cavalier King Charles will typically reach an average height of 12 to 13 inches and weigh between 13 and 18 pounds. It's important to note that sizes can vary based on the individual puppy. It's also important to understand that breeders consider the puppy to have reached their adult size when they are approximately 1 year old, rather than at 8 or 12 weeks. If you are unclear on the size of the puppy you are considering purchasing, it is best to ask the breeder directly.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can certainly be very versatile swimmers! Generally, these dogs have a fondness for water and many find a good deal of exuberant pleasure when given the opportunity for some swimming. The breed is generally considered to be good-natured and loves a good romp in the water! Depending on the nature of the environment, swimming can be a great form of exercise for this type of dog, if taught properly and if the dog has been prepared for such activity with necessary training and conditioning.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are wonderful family dogs that bring unparalleled joy and companionship–and plenty of love–into any home. They are exceptionally loyal, gentle, and eager to please, and they’re great with kids. They’re also smart and easily trainable, and while their small size makes them appear fragile, they’re surprisingly hardy and can usually keep up with even the most boisterous toddlers. They’re also surprisingly adaptable and can adjust to a variety of living situations, from bustling city apartments to bustling country farms.
Training a Cavalier King Charles requires patience, consistency, and an understanding of canine body language. Begin by introducing your Cavalier King Charles to basic obedience commands such as ‘sit,’ ‘stay,’ and ‘come.’ Break commands into small steps and reward your pup with treats and affection when they get it right. Make sure to use positive reinforcement and try not to use punishment or dominance when training. To help your pup stay focused, keep sessions short and always end on a positive note.
