Questions & Answers
A Cavalier King Charles is a small spaniel breed that gained popularity in the 16th century in the United Kingdom. These dogs are usually characterized by their long ears, dark eyes, and silky feathering. They generally have a gentle and loving demeanor, making them ideal companion dogs. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can live anywhere from 9 to 14 years, depending on health and activity levels, and range in size from 12 to 13 inches in height. With the right diet and exercise, these dogs can stay healthy and happy for many years to come.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are low-shedding dogs. Even though they have long, thick coats that can become matted if not brushed on a regular basis, they do not shed excessively. The breed is known for its silky, soft texture and for being hypoallergenic, meaning that those with pet allergies may be able to tolerate them better than other breeds. Regular brushing and grooming is necessary to keep the Cavalier King Charles coat in optimal condition, but overall, they are quite low-maintenance and non-shedding.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs should never be given onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, or chocolate as they can cause digestive issues or lead to potential poisoning. Additionally, human food such as processed foods, table scraps, and leftover foods should not be fed to Cavaliers; they should stick to a diet of premium quality foods specific to their breed and size that is formulated to meet their nutritional needs. Additionally, Cavaliers should not be fed bone chips, raw hide, and chew treats that are too hard since they can pose a choking hazard and irritation to their digestive system.
Before you get your Cavalier King Charles, it is important to have the right supplies to make sure they are comfortable and content. At a minimum, you should have a collar and leash, food and water bowls, grooming supplies, and a crate or kennel. Your veterinarian may also recommend certain vaccinations and flea and tick preventative treatments. Toys and chew bones are also essential, as is a comfortable and supportive dog bed. Lastly, don't forget to enroll in obedience classes and purchase basic training supplies like treats and clickers.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically grow to be 10-12 inches in height and weigh between 12-18 pounds when fully grown. Depending on its specific lineage, some Cavaliers may be on the larger side, growing to reach a height of 13-14 inches and weighing up to 20 pounds. These dogs can also vary in size depending on whether they are of the toy or show variety. The AKC breed standard states that the ideal size for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is 12-13 inches in height and wouldn 13-18 pounds in weight.
Absolutely! Taking your Cavalier King Charles running can be a great way to give them much-needed exercise. However, you should always keep safety in mind. Make sure that you’re up to date on your puppy’s vaccinations, as running can expose them to various types of parasites, particularly fleas and ticks. Also, take care to ensure that your pup is compliant and well-behaved during training and that you don’t take him into areas that are too hot, too cold, or too crowded.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels make excellent pets for first-time owners as they are gentle, friendly, and typically laid-back. Cavaliers are intelligent and attentive to their master and quite in tune with human emotions. They love being cuddled, and can be quite the lapdog, which makes them great companions for solo owners. Additionally, Cavaliers don’t require extensive exercise and will be content with a few long walks and playtime. They are also typically eager to please their owner and relatively easy to train.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels generally have a reputation for being great-natured, intelligent, and devoted companions. Many experts would agree that this breed of dog shows more intelligence than the average canine. They are intuitive, loyal, and willing to learn. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels exhibit a sense of inner wisdom which allows them to quickly determine people’s intentions. They may even pick up on the smallest shift in the environment and act accordingly. To put it simply, they are one of the most intuitive and affectionate breeds of dog and are, indeed, considered smart.
