Questions & Answers
Cavaliers King Charles are categorized as a toy breed, which is a grouping of small-sized dog breeds. They are typically sweet-tempered, with a gentle and affectionate disposition. The breed was named after King Charles II of England, who was known to be a fond admirer of the breed. Cavaliers have a long, silky coat which can come in four color varieties: Blenheim, Tricolor, Black & Tan, and Ruby. Their average lifespan is an impressive 12-15 years, making them an ideal companion for family life or solo living.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not considered hypoallergenic due to the amount of fur they carry. While they may not trigger the same reactions as some more commonly known hypoallergenic breeds like the Poodle or Bichon Frise, there is still a chance a person could have an allergic reaction to their fur. It is best to consult your doctor and discuss your allergies before bringing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel into your home.
It is important not to feed Cavalier King Charles puppies and adult dogs table scraps, chocolate, onions, avocado, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, sugar, or artificial sweeteners. These items can be toxic to dogs, so treating your pup with table scraps is a bad idea. Human food can be too high in fat for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, so it should be avoided. You should also not give them bones, rawhide, cooked chicken, any type of candy or gum, dairy products, or sugar.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, some essential items to buy include a good quality dog bed, water and food dishes, a collar and leash, treats, toys, grooming supplies, and nail clippers or files. Additionally, items such as a crate and baby gates may be useful for training and creating boundaries within the home. It is also important to get your Cavalier King Charles spayed/neutered and vaccinated.
The size of your Cavalier King Charles puppy depends on a few factors, such as its gender and its exact breed. Generally speaking, this type of puppy will grow to be between 12-13 inches tall and weigh around 13-18 pounds when fully grown. As a small breed, it will remain fairly light throughout its life. Of course, with proper nutrition and exercise, you can help keep your puppy healthy and maximize its growth potential.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically need about 30-60 minutes of daily exercise, depending on the size and age of the dog. Exercise can come from a variety of activities including walks, playtime, and obedience training. This breed is also fairly active indoors, so daily activities such as playing fetch are also helpful. That said, the minimum time recommended for daily walking is at least 30 minutes. It's important to make sure whatever walking you do includes some sort of mental stimulation, such as scent work or trick training, to keep your pup engaged and healthy.
Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known to be outgoing, gentle, and even-tempered around other animals. They are also known to get along well with other pets if they are properly socialized. Good socialization at a young age is key for all animals to get along with one another. While it is possible for Cavaliers to get along with other types of pets, they may display some territorial behavior depending on the individual and training. Because of their energetic and friendly temperament, it is likely they will get along, but it is not guaranteed.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their intelligence and even though they're not considered a top pick in the 'most intelligent dog breeds' list, they are still one of the smartest and loyal dog breeds out there. They pick up commands quickly and love to please their owners. They are also good at problem solving and have a remarkable memory which makes them relatively easy to train. They are known to be quite eager to please the owners, making them great companions. The willingness to please makes them good for families with multiple children, as they love to be part of the family activities.
