Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are classified as toy dogs. They have round heads, long ears, and a silky coat with a feathered texture. These beautiful dogs typically weigh between 10 and 18 pounds and come in four different colors: Blenheim (a reddish-brown with white markings), Ruby (a deep, solid red color), Black and Tan (black with tan markings) and Tri-color (black, white, and tan markings). Their gentle and loving temperament make them wonderful companions. As a result, they have been a popular breed for centuries.
The Cavalier King Charles is a small, spaniel-type breed with a silky, medium length fur coat. Typically, its coat is a combination of white with patches of dark colors such as black or tan. Its beautiful, long, feathered ears and tail further adds to its regal, royal look, while its large, round eyes are often described as looking wise and gentle. The Cavalier King Charles generally has a soft, gentle personality and are known to be affectionate and friendly to those they trust, making them excellent, loyal companions.
Cavaliers King Charles Spaniels are considered a toy breed and small in size, so it is important to know which foods and snacks are not suitable for them. Generally, owners should avoid feeding them table scraps, and limit fatty and greasy foods like fried potatoes, hot dogs, and hamburgers as these can cause inflammation in their digestive system, skin allergies, and obesity. Additionally, foods like popcorn, gum, candy, and certain raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, and beans can be difficult for them to digest and can mess up their digestive tract.
Before you bring your new Cavalier King Charles home, there are some simple steps you can take to ensure its transition into your home is a smooth one. First, make sure any potentially harmful objects are removed from the area cords, plants, small objects, and sharp objects should all be kept out of your puppy's reach. Next, be sure the space is puppy-proofed; this includes checking for adequate escape-proof fencing around the yard and securely latching any gates.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels usually reach adulthood at around 12 to 13 inches in height and 13 18 pounds in weight. Their life span typically averages between 9 14 years, depending on general health and genetics. While some breeds of dog can grow up to much larger sizes, Cavaliers typically remain small, and make great companion animals or family pets. Some adult Cavaliers may not grow any bigger than when they were puppies, depending on their parents, diet, exercise, and overall general health. With proper care, your Cavalier should stay healthy and happy!
It is possible to take your Cavalier King Charles running, however it is not recommended. This breed is not particularly suited for vigorous activities and its short nose and shallow chest can make it difficult for them to get sufficient air when engaged in strenuous exercise. For longer runs, they can become easily exhausted and may require frequent breaks. It is best to stick to short walks and low intensity activities like agility or playtime.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels get along well with other pets, as they are known for their friendly and adaptable personalities. This breed is born to be a companion and loves the companionship of other animals (and humans!). It may take a little patience and training to properly introduce a new pet to a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, as introducing them too quickly can cause the Cavalier to feel overwhelmed. If done properly, however, the Cavalier and new pet should have no problem getting along and potentially even becoming BFFs.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's daily exercise requirements can vary depending on their age and health condition. However, generally speaking, a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes of activity each day should be sufficient to keep them healthy and happy. You can also aim to increase the daily exercise to up to 50 minutes in order to challenge their physical abilities and mental stimulation. Activities such as short runs, playtime with other dogs, and fetch games can all help your Cavalier get the necessary exercise they need.
