Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small, sporty breed of dog classified as a toy breed. They are incredibly friendly and devoted lap dogs that bond strongly with their owners. They are known for their eagerness to please and generally have an even temper and sweet disposition. Cavaliers come in four colors: Blenheim (chestnut and white), Tricolor (black and white with tan markings), Black and Tan, and Ruby. They have long silky coats which make them look similar to a teddy bear.
Cavaliers King Charles are considered hypoallergenic since they are non-shedding and low dander dogs. While their coat does require brushing on a regular basis to keep it looking its best, they do not shed like many other breeds of dogs. This makes them a great pet for people with allergies; however, it is important to remember that no dog is completely hypoallergenic. Cavaliers have a single coat, composed of medium length silky fur that is fairly low maintenance. As long as you brush them regularly, you should not have any major issues with shedding.
Feeding your Cavalier King Charles the right diet is essential for the health and happiness of your dog. Your Cavalier should be fed a balanced, high quality diet that meets their particular nutritional concerns. You should also consider their age and activity level when selecting food. The average diet should include high-grade protein, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and beneficial supplements. You may also want to provide your dog with fresh fruits and vegetables as additional snacks or meal mixers. Always make sure to provide clean, fresh drinking water whenever your pup is eating.
Before bringing your new Cavalier King Charles home, it's a good idea to make sure your house is prepared and that all necessary supplies are at the ready. Be sure to have a soft bed for them to sleep on, food and water dishes, plenty of quality food, toys and treats, and a puppy-safe area that is free of hazards and any items they may not be allowed to get into.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are classified as a toy dog breed, which puts them in the smaller size range compared to other breeds. Generally speaking, they tend to reach a height of 12 to 13 inches and a weight of 13 to 18 pounds when fully grown, though some may reach up to 20 pounds. This makes them comparable in size to other similarly sized breeds such as Miniature Poodles, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, and Boston Terriers. Despite their relatively small size, Cavaliers have a big heart and are known to be good with children.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need regular daily exercise to stay healthy. A walk of at least 30-45 minutes a day is recommended to keep these active dogs fit and healthy. They also enjoy playing fetch, running in the backyard, heading out for trips to the park, or taking a swim in canals or streams. If possible, daily opportunities for off-leash playtime or activities should be provided to maintain your Cavalier’s physical and mental well being. However, monitor the activities closely as the breech faces are prone to grass cuts and pricks.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically make excellent family pets due to their typically gentle and affectionate nature. They are often especially friendly and patient with children, and they have a tendency to bond with all members of a family. They may even become a best friend for life with the youngest members in the household. Because of the eagerness the breed often displays in being around people, they tend to love being around kids. It's important to remember, however, that they do require a reasonable amount of exercise throughout the day in order to stay healthy and active.
It is recommended that you spend at least 15-20 minutes per day engaging in activities that will stimulate and exercise your Cavalier King Charles. Activities include walks, playing fetch, training sessions, and other interaction. This amount of activity for your pup’s general wellness should not only serve to keep your pet physically healthy, but mentally stimulated and content. However, time spent can and should vary depending on numerous factors such as your dog's age, overall health, and breed specific individual needs.
