Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a beloved breed and for good reason! They are full of personality, eager to learn, and incredibly friendly. One fun fact about these loving and gentle dogs is that they are descended from 'Toy Spaniels' that have been popular since the 16th century a royal favorite! Another interesting fact about these dogs is that the breed of Cavalier King Charles was named after England's King Charles II.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not hypoallergenic. This means that they can cause allergies in some people. While they do not shed excessively, their long, silky coats can still aggravate allergies due to regular shedding and saliva. Despite this, their low-dander coats and low-shedding coats make these dogs a good choice for people with mild allergies. However, those with more severe allergies may find these dogs more difficult to manage.
Cavalier King Charles are generally very healthy dogs, but there are certain foods they should not be eating if you want them to stay that way. Avoid feeding them chocolate, alcohol, avocados, grapes, macadamia nuts, raw fish, raw meats, or anything containing xylitol. Additionally, make sure that any treats you give to them are specifically made for dogs and are low-salt, low-sugar, and low-fat. Too much fat, salt, or sugar can lead to obesity and other health problems for dogs.
Before getting an Cavalier King Charles, some essential items you should purchase include a dog bed, food and water dishes, grooming supplies, appropriate toys, a collar and leash, and an identification tag with your address and contact information. Additionally, you will need to assess your home for potential danger areas such as fragile items or exposed wiring. You'll also want to stock up on rewards such as treats and toys for when your pet displays desirable behavior. Lastly, it's a good idea to purchase your pet insurance so that you can rest assured in the event of any unexpected events happening.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can be smaller or larger than average-sized dogs, depending on their breed and other factors--thus, they can be considered as a big dog or a small one. Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels range from 12 to 13 inches in height, and 13 to 18 pounds in weight in adulthood. Though they are generally a relatively small breed, some Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can exceed these height and weight limits. Though small in size, these dogs are known to be big on personality, always eager to please and always up for whatever comes next.
Taking your Cavalier King Charles running can be beneficial to their overall physical and mental health, however, there are a few considerations you should keep in mind before doing so. First, check with your veterinarian to make sure your dog is healthy enough for physical activities such as running. Also, make sure to start out slow, increasing the running time in small increments as your pup gets more comfortable. Additionally, monitor your pup's breathing, and be aware of warm temperatures or cold temperatures in case these conditions are affecting your pup.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are an excellent breed to have for any family. They are generally friendly, gentle, and lively dogs that are great around people of all ages, especially children. They have sweet temperaments and love being around their owners. As a breed, they are very affectionate and loyal, making them great playmates for children. They also do well with the tumultuous emotions that children tend to exhibit as they learn how to socialize. Surprisingly, these dogs are quite resilient and can even handle an occasional tussle with a child without getting Freeman about it.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels require minimal exercise, typically less than an hour per day. However, the amount of training needed for your specific pup may vary depending on its age, size, energy level, and other factors. Ideally, you should plan to give your pup at least fifteen minutes to twenty minutes of structured training each day, along with several short potty walks, potty training, and general socialization. However, if your pup is very energetic, you may need to add a few more minutes of additional activity throughout the day, such as fetch or agility.
