Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a friendly, affectionate, smallto medium-sized breed of dog, known for its easy-going, gentle nature. It's recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), and it's one of the most popular spaniel breeds in the world. The breed originated in the United Kingdom hundreds of years ago, and takes its name from the royal court of King Charles II in 1660.
The Cavalier King Charles has a beautiful silky coat which can be found in a variety of colors. The most common are Blenheim (a chestnut red and white combination), Ruby (solid ruby color with an even tan marking on the face, chest, legs and feet) and Black and Tan (jet black on the upper-body with three tan markings on the head, chest and lower body). The coat is slightly wiry to the touch and very easy to maintain with brushing or combing once or twice per week.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for being active and inquisitive, so it's important to feed them a healthy and nutritious diet. Depending on their age and size, feed them 1/4 to 1/2 cup of high-quality, dry kibble twice a day. Choose a food that contains at least 22% to 26% proteins and 12% to 15% fats. As for treats, give them an occasional dental treat or vegetable-based treats.
Before welcoming your new Cavalier King Charles into your home, it's important to ensure your house is properly prepared. This includes puppy-proofing your space. Block off any potentially hazardous areas with baby gates and removal of household items the puppy could potentially chew on. Make sure you have the right food, bedding, toys, and grooming supplies. Be sure to designate a comfortable area of the house, such as a crate, so the pup will feel secure when it arrives. You may also want to establish a potty training area in an area of the yard where the pup feels comfortable.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a small-to-medium-sized breed, usually ranging in height from 12 to 13 inches and weighing between 13 and 18 pounds when fully-matured. This breed is considered to be more petite than other breeds, providing a smaller stature that some families prefer. One major advantage to having a small-to-medium-sized pet is their ability to adapt well to small living spaces, while still having some energy about them that is enjoyable to be around.
Yes, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are natural swimmers and love taking a dip. They have long, feathered coats that help them stay buoyant in the water. Many Cavalier King Charles Spaniels enjoy playing in lakes and ponds, splashing around and swimming. However, if they are not taught to swim correctly, they may have difficulty finding their way back to land. It’s important to make sure your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is comfortable in the water and can swim safely, so always accompany them during swims and monitor their comfort level.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are great family dogs, known for their gentle, friendly and eager-to-please personalities. They love being around their family and enjoy being part of the daily hustle and bustle, whether they are just snuggling up on the couch or going for a walk or playing outdoors. They are also known to be great with children and are very tolerant of their playful antics. Cavaliers also have relatively low levels of energy, so they will follow along with any activity you have going on without ever being too much of an annoyance.
Training for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should be done with patience and consistency. Start by teaching the basics such as sit, stay, come, and down. Additionally, behavior modification training can address issues like digging, barking, and chewing. To begin teaching, use a number of positive reinforcement techniques such as treats, verbal praise, and toys. Set incremental goals and devote time each day to training. When you achieve each goal, reward your dog and take a break. Keep each practice session short, reinforcing desired behaviors.
