Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels originated in the British Isles and is a descendant of the spaniels featured in King James I's paintings in the early 1600s. It is a small-sized breed, with a gentle demeanor and soulful eyes. Its long, silky coat comes in four colors: Blenheim (a reddish brown and white), Ruby (all red), Black and Tan (black and mahogany red) and Tricolor (black, white and tan).
It is possible that you may experience allergies when in contact with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Allergies can be caused by a variety of factors including dander, saliva, and even their fur, so it's important to be aware of your tolerance for animals. However, it's also important to note that not all Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's will cause you to have allergies. Other issues like proper grooming and keeping clean surroundings can also help keep down the amount of allergens.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do not have any special dietary needs beyond what any other breed of dog would need. However, like any breed of dog, they should be fed a high-quality food based on their current age and size, as recommended by your veterinarian. Cavaliers may have specific food allergies, although these are rare and usually discovered only after testing. As with any breed, it is important to always work with your veterinarian to determine the best food and supplements for your specific Cavalier.
Preparing your home for a new Cavalier King Charles is an important task that should not be taken lightly. The first step is to make sure your home is safe and secure for your pup, meaning you should block off any areas of the house they should not access, such as above staircases or other sharp objects that may hurt them. Additionally, you should purchase basic items, such as a toy, crate, water and food dishes, treats and a bed or blanket. Making sure you have a stock of basic food items and treats, such as fruits and vegetables, is also a necessity.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four distinct size varieties, which are Toy, Blenheim, Tri-colored, and Ruby. The Toy size is the smallest variety, usually weighing less than 12 lbs, while the Blenheim generally falls between 12-18 lbs. The Tri-colored variety ranges somewhere between 13-18 lbs in size, and the Ruby variety is the largest of the four, usually weighing around 18-19 lbs. In addition to size, there are also differences in coat coloring between the varieties.
It is important to walk your Cavalier King Charles daily to keep him physically and mentally fit. Generally, a minimum of 20 minutes per day is recommended, but if possible, aim for at least 30-50 minutes of walking per day. This will ensure your pet has the exercise he needs for good health. If your pet is older or has joint problems, be mindful of his needs and adjust your walks accordingly. Additionally, you may want to vary your walking route to keep things interesting and ensure your pet gets a good amount of mental stimulation.
It is not always the case that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels get along with other pets. In general, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels tend to get along well with other animals when socialisation and training are provided, although there may be personality-based issues between some dogs and other pets. In addition, a Cavalier King Charles that wasn't raised with certain animals, such as cats or other small animals, may be more aggressive or territorial towards these animals.
Training a Cavalier King Charles is an undertaking that can bring great rewards but requires dedication and patience. Whether it is relatively easy or not will depend on the individual dog and approach taken. Different Cavalier King Charles have different temperaments and learning styles so what works for one might not for another. With a positive reinforcement approach based on building trust, bonding and consistency, and by breaking up the training into short sessions, success is usually attainable. Regular practice and repetition are also important components to a successful training program. Training can be an enjoyable experience if the right methods and attitude are employed.
