Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are the smallest of the royal toy breeds. They have a long silky coat, which can be either black and tan, or tri-colored. They are affectionate, mischievous and highly intelligent. Fun facts about Cavalier King Charles Spaniels include that they were originally bred to be lapdogs for King Charles I, II and his family. Queen Elizabeth II currently has two Cavaliers, Holly and Willow. They often stand on their hind legs and beg for food! Despite their gentleness, they have great stamina and are capable of running great distances.
Based on available research, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not technically hypoallergenic, but they do tend to shed less than many other breeds, and it is thought that their lower shedding could mean that fewer allergy-causing proteins will be released into the air. However, because all dogs produce allergy-causing salivary and sebaceous proteins, no dog breed is entirely hypoallergenic and all dogs could potentially trigger an allergic reaction.
When considering the best food for a Cavalier King Charles, the most important thing to consider is the ingredients. Look for a food which is specifically formulated for toy or small dogs like Cavaliers. High quality proteins such as chicken, fish, and lamb should be listed as the first few ingredients, and grains such as brown rice and barley should also be included. Avoid foods with low-quality protein sources such as animal by-products and meats from unknown sources. Look for foods which are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and glucosamine to help promote joint health.
To prepare your home for a new Cavalier King Charles, it is important to do your research on this breed and create a welcoming environment for them. Start by understanding their needs; Cavaliers require a good amount of exercise, regular brushing, and quality nutrition. Then, if possible, create a space for them to sleep, play, and relax. Make sure you have all the necessary supplies such as toys, bedding, bowls, treats, and leashes. Inspect for hazards like cords or poisonous plants and secure gates, balconies, and windows.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not typically considered "big" dogs in terms of their size in comparison to some other breeds. They usually range from 12-13 inches in height at the shoulder and rarely exceed 18 pounds in weight. Although their stature is small, they are considered a toy breed with a strongly devoted personality, making them the perfect companion for a variety of living situations. Some may describe them as surprisingly strong for their size or willful due to their independent character.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need plenty of exercise, typically at least 30-45 minutes of outdoor activity every day. Because they are a small breed and have a low activity threshold, it is important to keep them active to avoid putting them at risk of boredom and misbehaviour. Taking them on long walks, jogs, and allowing them to play in a secure area such as a fenced yard are all great ways to stimulate their natural curiosity and energy. Additionally, playing fetch and agility courses are a great way to challenge their agility and motor abilities.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are usually very gentle and tolerant, making them an excellent choice for families with children. They are known to be friendly and sociable and enjoy spending time with the people in their lives. They also love getting attention, so playing games and going for walks with your kids is something they'll look forward to. Keep in mind, though, they may need training so they understand proper behavior around kids and are not too boisterous.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their intelligence, and have been bred to be companion animals and for sporting activities. They are highly trainable and purposefully bred to be adaptable, clever, and eager to please—qualities that make them a smart breed. By nature, they are inquisitive and quick learners who require positive reinforcement for optimal results in training and to develop a strong bond with their owners. Cavaliers have a reputation for being obedient and willing to learn commands, including those to serve as service dogs.
