Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small, active breed of dog typically characterized by its silky, long fur and cute, sad eyes. The breed was created by the English in the 1700s and is the result of crossbreeding various toy spaniels. They are commonly used as companion dogs due to their friendly, affectionate nature. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's have a short muzzle and a deep chest. Their tail is usually left undocked and is carried not too high, and their ears hang in the shape of a "V".
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally considered to be non-shedding breeds. This, however, does not mean that they do not require regular grooming or brushing to keep their coats in top condition. Although many owners of Cavaliers report that their dogs barely shed at all, all dogs shed to some degree, and with Cavaliers, the amount of shedding may vary. Proper care will help reduce the amount of shedding, but no matter how much attention you give your pet, you can expect some amount of shedding and need to be prepared for that.
Feeding your Cavalier King Charles the right food is important for its overall health and wellbeing. It is recommended to provide a combination of fresh food, such as lean meats, and high quality kibble to ensure a balanced and nutritious diet. Make sure the kibble you choose has a minimum of 26% protein content and specified amounts of vitamins and minerals. Adding additional supplements of fish oils, fatty acids, and probiotics can help promote skin, coat, and digestive health.
To properly prepare your home for a new Cavalier King Charles, you'll need to take a few steps. First, set up an area for your pup's things, like a comfortable bed, toys, food bowls, etc. Second, cover your furniture, as destructive chewing is quite common in the breed. You should also prepare your home for potty training, either by sectioning off a potty area, or by using puppy pads throughout the space.
Besides being known for their gentle and affectionate dispositions, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels also come in a range of typical sizes! Teacup, Toy, and Miniature Cavaliers range from 9-12 inches in height, and are considered the smallest. There are then the Standard, Ruby, and Blenheim Cavaliers, which typically measure between 12-13 inches. Finally, King Charles II and Black and Tan Cavaliers usually measure between 13-15 inches.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need at least one hour of daily exercise to stay fit and healthy. This should be a combination of walking or running, playtime such as fetch, and mental stimulation such as training or outside exploration. Too much exercise without proper nutrition can cause joint, heart, or muscle issues later in life, so make sure your Cavalier is eating correctly for their level of activity. If you plan on going on hikes or runs, be aware of the heat as they can overheat quickly because of their long silky coats.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do get along quite well with children. This breed is friendly, alert, patient, and gentle, meaning they are both intelligent and trusting enough to make wonderful companions for kids. They are happy to take part in family activities, especially when it includes snuggling, playing fetch, and going on walks. Given their naturally loving personality, they also enjoy being around children, looking to them for play and affection. While it's always important to teach children how to interact with a dog, Cavaliers usually respond incredibly well, often leading to loving relationships.
Training a Cavalier King Charles is an important step in providing them a good foundation for proper behavior. Generally, they are very intelligent and respond well to training. To start, use rewards-based techniques to motivate them, such as treats, praise, or playtime. Make sure to keep sessions short, no more than 10-15 minutes at a time. Start by teaching basic obedience commands such as 'sit', 'stay', 'come', and 'heel'. Once they have mastered the basics, you can expand to more complex behaviors.
