Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an elegant toy breed of dog originating in England. It is a small, active breed, and is usually active and outgoing. It has a very long-standing reputation as a companion animal because of its gentle nature and love of people. This loyal breed requires patience and consistency to train, can be brave and courageous when around strangers, and has an affinity for being cuddled and petted. It's lovely silky coat comes in black and tan, Blenheim (chestnut and white), Tricolor (black, white and tan), and ruby.
Managing allergies with Cavaliers King Charles can be done in several ways. If you are allergic to your pet, start by having your allergist do skin testing or blood tests to determine what allergy triggers you have that are connected to your pet. Once you know what specific triggers cause your reaction, you can create a plan to reduce your exposure. Make sure to regularly vacuum and dust your home; bathing your pet often can also help reduce allergy symptoms.
Cavalier King Charles are known for having a voracious appetite and would be delighted with a variety of food. However, they are small dogs and have comparable dietary needs to other small breeds. An ideal diet for a Cavalier should include a proprietary food designed specifically for small breed dogs, as the calorie density of these foods is higher than larger breed formulas. For optimal nutrition, choose a dry formula that is rich in protein and fully balanced with vitamins and minerals. WET or canned foods are also an option with wet formulas being particularly beneficial for senior dogs, or dogs with dental issues.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, it's important to make sure you have all the essential supplies for your puppy. A few of the must-haves are a collar and leash, food and water bowls, dog food, grooming supplies, and a crate. You'll also want to take your puppy to the veterinarian for a check-up and vaccinations. Lastly, be sure to obtain a few toys or chews for your pup to keep them busy and engaged. Doing so will help ensure your little pup is happy and healthy.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) come in three sizes: toy (12 13 inches and 8 10 pounds), miniature (10 12 inches and 13 18 pounds) and then the regular size (13 15 inches and 18 20 pounds). While all three sizes have the same characteristically friendly temperament and sweet nature––overall, the actual size of the dog will depend on the individual pup.
The amount of exercise your Cavalier King Charles should have depends largely on their age. Generally, about 30 to 45 minutes of slow walking per day should suffice for puppies and younger dogs. Older dogs, usually 5 and up, can benefit from an hour of moderate walking daily. It's important to adjust their exercise routine as they age to ensure they are not over-exerting themselves. Be sure to give your pup plenty of breaks and preferably a potty break midway through your walk.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally friendly and patient dogs that get along very well with kids. They thrive on attention and love interacting with humans, making them the perfect family pet. With a temperament described as gentle, friendly, and affectionate, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels rarely demonstrate aggression and are typically quite tolerant of children’s noise and activity.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be a fun and rewarding experience, as many consider them to be intelligent, social and eager to please their owners. However, there are some challenges associated with training this breed, as they can be very headstrong and independent. It is important to get started with basic commands as soon as you get your dog home, and to establish yourself as the leader in a consistent and positive way. Regularly encourage your pup to focus on you and provide praise for good behavior, while providing corrections in a calm and patient manner for situations that require discipline.
