Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy breed of dog originally bred in the United Kingdom. They make excellent family pets and are known for their affectionate and sociable disposition. Here are some fun facts about these delightful little dogs: they are thought to have descended from King Charles II's 'Comforter Spaniel' and were given the name 'cavalier' by the royal family as a mark of their esteem; cavaliers are very people-oriented and seek to be a part of their owners' everyday life; they can get along with children, other pets, and even strangers;
The Cavalier King Charles coat is beautiful and eye-catching. They have a medium length silky-smooth coat that is slightly wavy, parti-coloured, and has feathery fringes. It has a well-developed undercoat which gives it a very fluffy and full look. The hair is usually longer on the ears, chest, legs, and feet, giving them an elegant, antique look; but never so long as to interfere with their activity and movement.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should not be fed chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, apples, macadamia nuts, or any other dangerous foods that may be harmful to their digestive system. Due to their small size, they are also prone to obesity and should be fed a well-balanced diet without overfeeding and/or snacking on high-calorie snacks. Avoid giving them bones, as they can cause blockages in their intestines. As with any pet, be sure to check with your veterinarian before changing food or treats to ensure your dog is receiving nutritionally balanced meals.
Before you bring home your new Cavalier King Charles spaniel, it is important to take some steps to get your home ready. First, make sure any plants and small items that may be poisonous to your pup are safely tucked away from their reach. Next, arrange a comfortable area with a bed, toys, and food and water dishes for your Cavalier King Charles. Finally, pet-proof your home; secure small items, cover outlets, and block off dangerous areas. Prepare your home for your new pup, and you'll both enjoy the experience!
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are considered a relatively small breed. These dogs will reach a size of 12-13 inches tall at maturity, with an average weight of around 13-18 pounds for adult males and 12-17 pounds for adult females. While the ideal size for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is usually between those mentioned above, some dogs might slightly exceed the established standards and reach up to 15 inches in height or 20 pounds in weight. It's worth noting that the weight of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will vary based on its diet and exercise habits.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are actively curious dogs, making them lots of fun to be around. They are energetic and love to run and explore. While they typically need less exercise than other breeds, they do tend to be more active when outdoors. They enjoy chasing after balls and toys, as well as running around the backyard or park. On walks, they typically try to investigate as much as they can and to sniff around their surroundings. With proper exercise, these dogs make great companions and family pets.
While Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known to have an easy-going temperament, it's important to always supervise interactions between the dog and other pets. It's possible for two animals – regardless of breed – to get along wonderfully with each other, while it's also possible to have two animals that don't like each other. While most Cavaliers are good-natured and social, introducing them to another animal can be a stressful experience. Making sure to create a positive experience through plenty of attention and safe spaces during the intro process can ensure their transition into a multi-pet household is smooth.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are intelligent dogs that are highly responsive to training. They are eager to please their owners and, with patience and consistency, can easily be taught basic obedience commands. Cavaliers are social animals that like to be in the company of their family, so they do best when given plenty of companionship and engagement from their family members. As they are people-oriented, Cavaliers can be very clever about picking up idiosyncrasies about their owners. They are known for being quite intuitive when it comes to reading human emotions, making them a very loyal and caring companion.
