Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels belong to the Toy Group in the AKC’s breed classification system. These friendly, gentle dogs make wonderful companions and have a blithe and happy disposition. They range in size anywhere from 12-13 inches tall and weigh approximately 13-18 pounds. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have an affectionate and devoted nature that makes them the perfect family pet they are eager to please and easy to train. They are also known for being somewhat social butterflies they love to socialize and are great with children and other pets.
Many people are fond of the Cavalier King Charles breed because of their fluffy coats and adorable faces. At the same time, homeowners often worry about dogs that shed a lot. Fortunately, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are low-shedding dogs, so they don't produce as much hair as some other breeds. While they do need regular brushing to prevent coat matting, their coat does not require constant maintenance because they are non-shedding.
It is important to not feed your Cavalier King Charles any foods that may not be safe or beneficial for him. For example, avoid giving him foods like chocolate, dairy products, grapes, and raisins, as these can be dangerous. Instead, he should receive a breed-appropriate diet that is high in protein and low in fats, carbohydrates, and grains. Be sure to provide him with plenty of fresh, clean water. Avoid giving him table scraps, bones, or anything that could potentially be a choking hazard.
Cavalier King Charles are typically a healthy and robust breed, but they may have some extra needs that are important to keep in mind. Generally speaking, it is important to ensure that they get regular exercise so they remain healthy both physically, and mentally. Additionally, Cavaliers have a predisposition to suffer from certain health conditions, such as Mitral Valve Disease and Syringomyelia, meaning that they should receive regular check-ups with a vet and the relevant screening tests for these conditions.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in two sizes Toy (or Teacup) and Standard. Toy Cavaliers are on the smaller side, typically weighing between 4 and 8 lbs. Meanwhile, Standard Cavaliers tend to be larger, usually anywhere from 11 to 18 lbs. In general, Cavaliers of either size are considered as medium-sized dogs, with an average height of 12 to 13 inches. You can easily tell a Toy Cavalier apart by their larger eyes and shorter muzzle in comparison to other Cavaliers.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need moderate levels of exercise. They are great companions for leisurely walks, either on a leash or in a safely enclosed area. To keep them feeling satisfied and healthy, two walks a day of at least 15-20 minutes each are recommended, as well as periods of playtime. They should also be given an opportunity to run and explore, being careful to stick to safe and familiar places. Dividing up activity times throughout the day is an ideal way to provide them with the necessary amount of exercise and stimulation to keep them physically and mentally healthy.
Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels get along well with kids. They are known for their gentleness, affection, and loyalty and tend to be very patient with young ones. They are also very intelligent, making them good learners and easy to train. Their small size is ideal for households with small children who may want a small, lap-sized companion. Plus, the Cavaliers' sweet and calm demeanour make them ideal family dogs. Furthermore, they are gentle and loving, and are content to be in the presence of children, even if they are not being playing directly with them.
An appropriate amount of exercise for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels per day depends on the individual dog's age, size, breed and general health. Generally, a young Cavalier King Charles Spaniel needs around 30 to 40 minutes of exercise each day. Older dogs may need only 15 to 20 minutes of light exercise daily. If your pet is in good health, you can increase the duration of exercise; activities such as running, brisk walking or playing best suit for this breed.
