Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles is a toy spaniel that belongs to the Toy Group, making it one of the smallest dog breeds. This breed shares its origins with the King Charles Spaniel, but the Cavalier King Charles is slightly larger and has longer ears and a slightly larger head. Their coat is silky and can be either one of four different colors: Blenheim, Ruby, Black and Tan, and Tri-color. They are gentle, affectionate dogs and make great companions. They are easy to train and thrive in a family environment where they get lots of attention.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered to be non-shedding, and fewer allergens are released with their minimal shedding. That said, they still require regular brushing and grooming to maintain a healthy coat and to minimize shedding. It's relatively easy to control the amount of shedding with a regular grooming schedule including brushing with a bristle brush, bathing with a mild shampoo, and trimming of long nails. This breed is also known for being easy to train and sociable, making them an ideal companion for the whole family.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a friendly breed and experienced owners understand that there are some foods they should avoid. Foods to avoid include sugar, chocolate, onions, alcohol, grapes, raisins and avocados. These foods can be dangerous to their health, so it is important to keep them away from them. Other foods that are recommended to avoid include raw eggs, raw meats, bones, nuts, corn on the cob and dairy products. All of these can cause digestive upset and potential choking hazards.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, you should make sure you are well stocked with all of the essentials. This includes a kennel or crate to provide a safe environment for your pup, high-quality food and treats, a comfortable bed, a leash, collar, and tag, toys to keep your dog entertained and stimulated, a brush or comb to maintain a healthy coat, and any necessary veterinary items like flea and tick treatments, heartworm preventive and teeth cleaning items. Also, consider any items that will help you house train your pup, like pee pads or a baby gate.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered small to medium sized dogs. On average, a fully grown Cavalier King Charles can range in weight from about 10-20 pounds, and can reach up to 13 inches in height when fully grown. Despite their small stature, they are known for being loyal, affectionate, and courageous. These traits have earned them a reputation of being ‘big dogs in a small package’. Their brave and affectionate nature even prompts many owners to refer to them as ‘lap dogs.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs need at least 20-30 minutes of physical exercise daily. Exercise should include a combination of walks, running, playing fetch, or other activities that stimulate their brains and keep them active. To maintain their optimum health, they should have access to a safe, outdoor area to explore, as well. Additionally, mental stimulation is important for this breed of dog as they can become bored and wreak havoc in the home. Stimulating their minds with toys or games can help keep them entertained and prevent behavioral problems from forming.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known to be exceptional house pets, and make perfect family companions. They are intelligent, affectionate, social, and very willing to please. They are great with children, so a family with children can rest assured knowing they'll have a loving and loyal pup in their home. They're highly trainable and are eager to please, which makes housetraining and obedience training a piece of cake. They're loyal, devoted, and will stay by your side for many years to come.
The amount of training you need to provide to your Cavalier King Charles varies depending on the age and energy level of your dog. Generally speaking, a Cavalier King Charles should receive at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, but some may need more. This could include anything from simply playing a game in the backyard to a more vigorous walk or even a light jogging session. On a daily basis, activities should be tailored to his individual needs, with an emphasis on physical exercise followed by mental stimulation.
