Questions & Answers
The most interesting thing about Cavalier King Charles Spaniels is their remarkable history. Known as "comforter spaniels" they were kept as a companion pet as far back as the 16th century. King Charles II of England was known to have been particularly fond of them. This royal admiration contributed to the breed's popularity, and because of this their appearance has remained largely unchanged over the centuries. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four distinctive colors: Blenheim, Tricolor (black and tan with white chest and face markings), Ruby, and Black & Tan.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are often classified as non-shedding dogs, but it is important to distinguish between non-shedding and hypoallergenic. While their shedding is minimal, their fur doesn't fall out in large clumps like other breeds, they will still need regular grooming to keep their fur from tangling. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do not have an undercoat so their fur is typically more lightweight and fine, making them more suitable to people with sensitive skin and allergies.
Feeding your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel a healthy diet is essential to maintain their overall health and energy levels. A high-quality dry dog food should be chosen that contains plenty of healthy fats, proteins, carbs, and vitamins to meet their nutritional needs. If desired, additional wet food options, such as canned fish or meat, can also be mixed in to provide added moisture. Feeding your dog twice a day with set times and portions is recommended to keep them healthy and active, making sure a bowl of fresh, clean water is available at all times.
Preparing your home for your new Cavalier King Charles is essential for ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for your pup. First, make sure to puppy-proof the area, removing any potential hazards or dangerous items that your pup may come in contact with. Additionally, it is important to designate a safe and secure space for your pup to sleep, rest, and play. This shouldn't be a cramped area and should be big enough for your pup to move around comfortably. You'll also need to stock up on all the necessary puppy supplies, including toys, food, treats, and grooming tools.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in three distinct sizes Toy, Blenheim, and Ruby. Toy Cavaliers weigh between 6 and 10 pounds and stand under 12 inches tall, with a head circumference of between 14 and 16 inches. Blenheim Cavaliers weigh between 13 and 18 pounds and stand at 12 to 13 inches tall, with a head circumference of between 15 and 17 inches. Ruby Cavaliers are the largest of the three, tipping the scales at between 14 and 18 pounds and standing at 13 to 15 inches tall, with a head circumference of between 16 and 18 inches.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, typically loving and loyal, are companion dogs that require plenty of time and attention from their owners. It's important to realise that although they are small in size, they need regular exercise in addition to plenty of playtime and interactive activities to stay physically and mentally healthy. They will typically need around an hour of physical activity each day, preferably split up into two or three sessions throughout the day. This could include walks, playtime, or activities like fetch.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels get along quite well with other pets. While every individual pup has different personality traits, Cavaliers are usually sweet and gentle animals that relentlessly love human and animal companions alike. With proper introductions and socialization, Cavaliers typically adapt well to other pets. While this breed may initially be hesitant or scared around cats or dogs, once they are comfortable, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are typically eager to play and dote on their furry friends.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally deemed intelligent dogs by their owners and experts alike. It's easy to see why these beloved breeds are so clever, as they possess many of the same traits as other smart breeds. Cavaliers are often loyal and highly trainable, exhibiting a great capacity for problem solving. They tend to be very social and eager to please, seeking out attention from those around them. Despite their playful, animated personalities, Cavaliers are also highly obedient and often strive to take cues from their owners.
