Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a very long and interesting history! They were the favored companion of King Charles II of England in the 17th century. The breed's popularity and beauty has kept them in the spotlight to this day. The Cavaliers have a sweet and gentle nature and tend to be friendly towards everyone. They have an excellent temperament and are great family pets. Cavaliers enjoy outdoor activities and many love to march in dog parades. They have a distinct experience as a show dog because of their physical elegance and social poise.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do not shed much, if at all. While their individual shedding can vary, they tend to have a consistently low-shedding coat. Commonly referred to as a “soft, silky, and abundant”, their distinct coat is considered a breed standard among experts. These beautiful lapdogs maintain their soft locks due to their long hairs in addition to a short and fine undercoat, thus making them relatively low-shedding.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have sensitive stomachs and should not be fed human snacks like chocolate, onions, and coffee. It is important to also avoid feeding them dog food with unhealthy ingredients such as artificial dyes, corn, and wheat. Additionally, dogs can easily become overweight or obese, so it is important to feed them in moderation and only give them small amounts of low-calorie treats throughout the day.
Before purchasing a Cavalier King Charles, some key items that you should acquire include food and water dishes, a collar with ID tag, safe and secure housing indoors or out, a selection of toys, a toothbrush and toothpaste, nail clippers, a brush, a first-aid kit, and a vet-recommended flea and tick medication. Additionally, a training and socialization plan is important to establish boundaries and ensure your pup is well-behaved in a variety of situations.
The size of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel depends on whether they are classified as a toy or a miniature breed. Toy Cavaliers usually measure between 11 and 13 inches at the top of their shoulder blades, and weigh between 10 and 18 pounds. Meanwhile, miniature Cavaliers tend to reach heights between 11 and 13 inches and weigh between 13 and 18 pounds. Additionally, Cavaliers come in a variety of colours, such as Blenheim, black & tan, ruby red, and more. On average, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will live for 12 to 14 years if cared for properly.
The amount of walking required for a Cavalier King Charles often depends on their individual activity level and age. Generally, they require at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, ideally in two 15 minute walks. However, if your Cavalier is young and full of energy, they may require more time to get out and explore. Making sure to monitor your puppy’s fatigue during walks, in order to prevent overexertion, is paramount. Introducing toys, games, and activities that provide physical exercise and mental stimulation are also beneficial to their overall health.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their gentle and affectionate nature, making them great family dogs. They are very eager to please and highly loyal, meaning they form strong bonds with those who take the time to nurture them. Their short hair requires minimal grooming and their small size means they don't need a huge amount of exercise. They love being the center of attention, so a family unit is sure to make them feel special. As long as they get plenty of time and attention, Cavaliers are a great choice for any family.
Training a Cavalier King Charles is important to establish a bond between the owner and his or her dog. The amount of time one should spend training each day should depend on the needs and temperament of the individual dog. Generally speaking, at least 20-30 minutes per day, with some sort of physical activity and mental stimulation, should be sufficient. However, if your dog has particular behavioral problems, extra time and patience should be devoted to addressing these issues.
