Questions & Answers
Cavilers King Charles are a breed of spaniel known for their gentle nature and playful spirit. Due to their small size and trainable nature, they can make great apartment pets. As a breed, they are generally good with children and come in four colors Blenheim, Ruby, Black & Tan, and tri-color. In addition, they are generally known to be high upkeep due to their long and silky coats, so regular grooming is a must. As a puppy, they can require a lot of attention, but once mature they become an incredibly docile and loyal companion.
Allergies can be managed by taking proper care of your Cavalier King Charles. Make sure that you comb through their fur every day to remove any allergens or pollutants that may be trapped in the fur. Vacuum frequently to keep the area clean and free of allergens, and consider investing in an air purifier if necessary. Bathe or groom your dog regularly using allergy-friendly or organic products. Additionally, keep your pet away from sources of allergens, such as other animals, fragrant items, and so forth.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should avoid certain foods, as some may be hazardous to their health. Human food such as chocolate, avocado, macadamia nuts and raisins should not be given as treats. Too many high fat and processed treats can lead to digestive problems. Additionally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should not consume raw or undercooked fish, poultry or meat, as this food may contain bacteria that is dangerous for them. It's best to stick to properly cooked meats as treats when feeding your Cavaliers. Dairy products should be avoided since most Cavaliers are lactose intolerant.
Before bringing your new Cavalier King Charles home, it is important to prepare your home environment so that the pup has the best possible transition. Start by setting aside the necessary items including food and water bowls, dog bed or crate, a harness and leash, and toys. Further, you should create a designated area or particular room where your Cavalier King Charles will sleep, as well as lay out a potty training schedule. Make sure to familiarize yourself with standards of care for Cavaliers, including regular grooming and veterinary visits.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not considered a small dog breed by the American Kennel Club. Generally speaking, they can grow to between 13-18 inches in height and their weight ranges from 13-18 pounds. Consequently, they belong to the toy breed category, which is classified as medium-sized. It should also be noted that Cavaliers have a deep chest, giving them a strong, muscular build that contributes to their sturdy and active nature. Ultimately, they are not quite as small as some toy breeds, but definitely not as large as their close relative, the English Toy Spaniel.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution to how much time Cavalier King Charles should walk daily, as it depends on the individual dog's age, level of activity, and breed-specific requirements. On average, a healthy, adult Cavalier King Charles should get a minimum of 30-45 minutes of walking each day. This can be split into two or more walks throughout the day or taken in one long walk. Puppies may require less walking, while senior dogs may need more.
Yes, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can usually get along well with children. They are very loving and patient dogs who make ideal companions for families with children. Cavaliers are loyal, affectionate, and playful, so they likely will enjoy playing with children. As with any breed of dog, it is important that both the children and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are taught proper manners and socialized properly. Kids should be taught how to interact with the dog respectfully so that both the dog and the children can be safe and happy.
Training a Cavalier King Charles requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Start off by teaching him basic commands like 'Sit', 'Down', and 'Come'. First, have your dog in a sit, then give him a treat every time he successfully follows the command. As he becomes more skilled, you can start to wean him off treats and reward him with verbal praise and physical affection. Be sure to remain consistent and varied with your dog's training. Take him for walks, introduce him to novel stimuli, and play activities that promote healthy relationships with other animals.
