Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a breed of toy spaniels that are beloved by many pet owners for their loyal and affectionate personalities. They date back hundreds of years and were especially popular at the time of English King Charles II. These dogs are known for their incredibly long, silky coats that often drape down to the ground, and their calm, amiable personalities. Fun facts about this breed include that they were bred to be lap dogs and were often given away as presents for special occasions.
The Cavalier King Charles is a small dog breed with a flowing, silky coat. Their coat comes in four different colors including Blenheim (rich chestnut and white), Black and Tan, Tricolor (black, white and tan) and Ruby (solid deep red). The breed's soft coat is medium-length with feathering on their ears, chest and feet. They require frequent brushing due to their heavy coat, and require trimming of their heads and ears every few months.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their friendly demeanors and lively personalities, but they need a balanced diet for optimum health. In order to avoid health issues in your beloved Cavalier, it's important to avoid feeding them human food, raw shore or table scraps. High sugar, salty and other unhealthy foods should also be avoided. A healthy diet for your pet should focus on high quality, specialized pet food with appropriate amounts of proteins, vitamins, fatty acids and carbohydrates.
Being the best puppy parent for your Cavalier King Charles requires dedication, patience, and consistency. To ensure your pup stays healthy, create a regular veterinary checkup schedule and follow through on his immunization and hygiene needs. Socialize your pup early and often to ensure good manners when interacting with other dogs and new people. Establishing routines for potty training, mealtimes and playtime will provide structure and help establish yourself as the leader. Be patient and positive when training and provide lots of love and praise when commands are successful.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically reach a standard adult size of between 12 and 13 inches (30-33 centimeters) in height at the shoulder. Weight range is typically between 10 and 18 pounds (4.5-8 kilograms). Since the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small breed, they tend to mature quickly. Teacup sizes of the breed are typically smaller than the standard adult size measurements. They reach maturity at a much younger age, normally between 8 and 11 months. However, the lifespan of this breed is in the range of 9-14 years.
Every dog is different, but for a Cavalier King Charles, 30 minutes to an hour of exercise each day is ideal. If your pup is a bit young, you should start with shorter walks and gradually build up the length. People often underestimate the importance of a good walk – it’s not only great exercise, but it helps your Cavalier to explore the world, build confidence and socialize with other dogs. Too much exercise in a single day can be dangerous so it’s important to pace your dog’s walks and take breaks throughout the day.
Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do well living with other pets, including cats and other dogs. While they have an affinity for human companionship and are not fond of being alone for long periods of time, they tend to get along well with housemates of the same or different species. Their sociable nature and gentle disposition make them an excellent companion for other pets, if introduced and trained appropriately. With patience and ample positive reinforcement, Cavaliers and other pets can learn to coexist and even form lasting friendships.
The exact amount of time needed to train a Cavalier King Charles will depend on the individual dog, but in general, it is recommended that you should dedicate at least thirty minutes per day to training your pet. During this time, you may need to spend some extra time on teaching a particular skill if your dog is having difficulty understanding the command. If you are a first-time trainer of this breed, you may need to spend more time to get the basics down.
