Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a member of the Spaniel family and are a small-sized breed of dog originating in the United Kingdom. It is known for its regal appearance and friendly demeanor. Usually they weigh in between 13 and 18 pounds with a moderate to long silky coat that requires regular brushing and grooming. The breed's tail is usually long and is covered in luxurious feathering. The breed is easily identifiable by its large, dark, round eyes and domed forehead. The breed is an active breed that loves to play and can make an excellent companion for an active family.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not considered to be hypoallergenic breeds. While they do shed an average amount, their coats are generally considered to be on the silkier side and they are prone to some dander production, which can both trigger reactions from those who are sensitive to dog hair or dander. Although this breed does not have a low-shedding coat, as with any breed it is recommended to groom them regularly, as well as to vacuum and dust regularly in the home, to keep the allergens down.
Cavalier King Charles should not be fed avocados, onions, garlic, chives, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, citrus fruits, chocolate, or tea, as these foods can be toxic to the breed. Additionally, it's best to stick to diets specially created for the breed or its size which should include high-quality dry food designed for growing puppies and small breeds. Avoid too many processed treats because these can upset your pet's stomach and contribute to obesity. For an adult Cavalier, feeding about 1/2 cup of food per day is recommended.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, it is important to buy some essential items. A high-quality food specifically made for the breed, a comfortable and well-sized bed, a crate and some toys that are chewable and safe are all must-haves. Any medical items such as heartworm preventative and flea medication should also be purchased. Along with this, a brush for grooming and regular removal of excess fur should be acquired. Nature's Miracle is an excellent product to use in case of occasional potty accidents.
The size of your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will vary depending on whether you have a male or a female dog, and also on the bloodline. Typically, adult males average between 12 to 13 inches in height, and adult females average 11 to 12 inches. The weight of your Cavalier will range between 13 to 18 pounds for males, and 12 to 17 pounds for females. Even though they are small dogs, Cavaliers fill up any room with their big personalities! Typically they will live to be between 12 to 15 years old.
The amount of walking needed for your Cavalier King Charles will depend upon their age and activity level. Generally, adult Cavaliers require 30 minutes of activity per day. Puppies may need as much as 1-2 hours, depending on the size of your pup and your own activity level. When walking your Cavalier, be sure to mix up the pace and terrain to make sure they get a balanced form of exercise. Additionally, providing regular opportunities for play and a puzzle toy can help your pup stay mentally alert and active.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are known for being gentle and affectionate companions, which is why they typically make great family pets. They have very sweet dispositions and often adore children, so for this reason the answer to the question is usually a resounding yes. They typically do both enjoy spending time with them and get along with them well, provided that the interactions are calm and age-appropriate. They also tend to have a lot of patience and can be quite tolerant, especially with younger children or those who are still learning how to correctly interact with dogs.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be quite manageable, depending on the age and size of the dog. Younger, smaller dogs most often respond more quickly to training. It is important to keep sessions short and reward the dog's progress with consistent praise and rewards. It's also helpful to make sure the dog understands the various commands through repetition and practice. To ensure successful training, stick to a routine and never be overly harsh or disapproving of the dog's mistakes. With patience and consistency, Cavalier King Charles dogs usually respond well to a variety of training methods.
