Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small breed of companion dog that was developed in England during the 17th century. They have large, soulful eyes, an essence of grace and beauty, and a friendly, spirited temperament. Cavaliers boast a luxurious silky coat, with feathers gracing the chest, legs, thighs, and tail. Available in four colors—Blenheim, ruby, black and tan, and tri-color—this breed is known for its loyalty, as well as its outstanding obedience.
The Cavalier King Charles coat is very soft and luxurious! It is a long and wavy single coat that lies flat and has minimal feathering, although this can differ from breeder to breeder. The colors and markings are different for each coat color, which gives the Cavalier King Charles a unique look. Generally, the colors range from solid colors of black, ruby, or tri-color to a blenheim mixture of white and red.
It is important to be mindful of feeding your Cavalier King Charles. Human food should generally be avoided, as many of our meals are too salty and can cause gastric distress in dogs. Feeding them table scraps can also encourage your dog to beg for food, which is an undesirable behavior. Additionally, as with all dogs, certain foods such as chocolate, grapes, and onions can be toxic, so they should never be given to any dog.
To prepare your home for your new Cavalier King Charles, the first step is to set up a safe, comfortable living area for your pup. Ensure any potentially hazardous items are out of their reach and decide on a specific spot to designate as their "bed." Also, choose two or three areas in the house for your Cavalier to relieve themselves, and create a clear border around those spots with baby gates. Additionally, assemble and stock up on the necessary items such as food, water dishes, bedding, toys, treats, a collar, and a leash.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four sizes: Toy, Ruby, Blenheim, and Tricolour. Toys stand between 8-10 inches tall and weigh up to 13 lbs. while The Ruby is slightly larger, with a maximum size of 12 inches and weight up to 18 lbs. Blenheims, the most popular of the sizes, have a maximum size of 13-15 inches and weigh around 18-19 lbs. Lastly, Tricolours are often the largest, ranging from 14-16 inches tall and weighing up to 22 lbs.
Yes, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known to enjoy swimming. Many pet owners report that their Cavaliers love to jump into the pool and play with their owners, swimming around and having a great time. Cavaliers have been known to love swimming for exercise and sheer joy, and this activity can help to strengthen their natural canine instincts. It is important to remember, however, that swimming in deep bodies of water can be hazardous for Cavaliers since they have a low body fat percentage and experience the cold faster, so always monitor your dog closely while swimming and look into safety products like life jackets.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do well with other pets, both cats and other dogs. Although they typically display gentle, affectionate behavior, they can be territorial and may prefer to be the only pet in the home. Proper socialization and training from an early age can help ensure that Cavaliers are accepting and comfortable around other pets, so it's important to provide positive reinforcement and regular interactions with other organized groups and animals.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are indeed intelligent breed of dogs. They possess the same level of intelligence as other recognized breeds, and may even outshine them in certain areas. These dogs have great memories, and can learn and retain commands at a faster rate than most other breeds. They are very adaptable and can fit into just about any home. Moreover, they have a talet for problem-solving, typically demonstrated by their eagerness to please their human families. They are quick to potty train, understand commands easily, and can even learn tricks quickly.
