Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are classified as a Toy breed. In addition to being small, they are known for their gentle and loving temperaments. Cavaliers make excellent family pets due to their low energy and playfulness. They are generally loving and sociable with people and other pets, making them a great companion. Though they are unassuming, Cavaliers are still proud and confident dogs that crave love and attention. Cavaliers love being around their owners and they are smart enough to excel in obedience and agility training.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not technically hypoallergenic because all dogs have dander and saliva that can cause allergies. However, many people who live with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels report few to no allergic reactions due to their coats and general demeanor. The breed has a thick and silky coat that does not shed much and requires very little care. These small dogs are also known for being low-shedding and low-dander, making them a great choice for people who suffer from allergies.
Cavalier King Charles can have a range of dietary needs, which largely depend on their age and activity level. Generally, they are a great fit for a high-quality dry kibble that is specially formulated for small breed dogs. They may also enjoy canned foods and other homemade meals that are tailored to their specific dietary needs. Be sure to also provide plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as high-fiber grains like brown rice and oatmeal. These can be fed as part of their regular meals or as occasional treats.
Cavalier King Charles have some unique requirements, depending on their age. The Toy size is estimated to reach 8 to 11 pounds; the Miniature to reach 13 to 18 pounds; and the Standard to reach 18 to 24 pounds. Because male Cavaliers tend to be slightly larger than females, you may also wish to consider the sex of the puppy when evaluating adult size. That being said, growth rates vary widely even within the same breed and size, so it's difficult to determine just how big your pup will be at maturity.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a fairly active breed, requiring daily exercise and stimulation. They should get a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise each day so they can stay healthy and fit. This should ideally consist of a combination of regular walks throughout the day and activities like agility, fetch, or flyball that keeps their minds and bodies entertained. Exercising with your dog is also key to strengthen the bond between you two and have extra fun. As a bonus, that extra exercise can help prevent issues like obesity, depression, and destructive behavior that could arise from being too idle.
