Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles is a small to medium-sized dog of the toy breed class, originally bred as a lap dog and companion dog for royalty. First appearing in the United Kingdom during the 17th century, it enjoyed immense popularity among the aristocracy in the court of Queen Anne and King Charles I. The breed is renowned for its gentle nature and friendly dispositions, and commonly known for its silky coats and long ears. The Cavalier King Charles is also a commonly sought-after pet among many countries, due to its playfulness, loyalty, and tireless energy.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a gorgeous breed of dog with a signature style of coat. Their readily recognizable coats are made up of long, silky hair, often with a slight wavy texture. The coats come in an array of striking colors and patterns; black and tan, ruby, blenheim, tricolor, and even a solid black. Though their coats are relatively low-maintenance and do not require frequent grooming, they should still be brushed regularly to prevent tangles and mats and should be clipped every few months.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels require a balanced diet with lots of nutrients. They do well on a good quality brand of dry dog food that is fit for their breed, age, and activity level. For a puppy, look for one that is specifically made for a large breed puppy. Adult dogs should have a food with increased protein content and fiber to maintain a healthy weight. Avoid foods that are high in grains, and make sure to get one that is formulated for adult dogs. Make sure to offer dog-safe treats as well.
When preparing for a new Cavalier King Charles, you should purchase all the essential supplies before bringing the new pup home. This should include food and water dishes, a comfortable bed, leash and collar, a soft brush, pet toys, a pet carrier, puppy pads, dog shampoo, nail clippers, chew toys, and a sturdy, safe kennel that is big enough for your new pet to move about in.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered to be small dogs. They are classified by the American Kennel Club as a Toy breed, which is the smallest category of dog size. According to the AKC, Cavaliers stand between 12 and 13 inches tall at the shoulder and typically weigh between 13 and 18 pounds. Although considered small in size, these dogs have large, proud heads, luxurious, silky coats, and kindly, expressive eyes which are all characteristic of a much larger breed.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally active, cheerful dogs that enjoy exercising and playing. They have a sweet temperament and are usually eager to please their owners. They can have plenty of energy when given the chance to expend it, although they need to have regular opportunities to do so. Even though they are small, these pets make excellent walking companions and are easy to keep up with if your walking ability allows it. If you live in a home with a small yard, that should be enough for their exercise needs, as they don’t require excessive amounts of physical activity that larger breeds do.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are typically wonderful with kids due to their famously gentle nature. They thrive on love and attention, and especially enjoy being around children because of their playful and sweet temperaments. Their size also makes them ideal as companions for children, as they are small and gentle enough to be snuggled and carried. In addition to being great playmates, their behavior is usually gentle, patient, and loyal. As long as their exercise and mental stimulation needs are met on a regular basis, they are usually very gentle and loving with children of all ages.
Training your Cavalier King Charles should be a positive experience for both you and him. As with most breeds, consistency is key. Start by teaching him basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and stand. Make sure to give him treats for positive reinforcement. Socialization is also important, so take him out for walks in different areas and introduce him to different people and animals. As you progress, gradually increase the duration and difficulty of the commands. Your Cavalier King Charles should also be trained to obey your commands and help build his confidence when in unfamiliar situations.
