Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are classified as a toy breed, though they are larger than many other dogs that are categorized as 'toy'. They also have a medium-length silky coat and gentle, friendly personalities, making them a popular companion breed. The average weight of a Cavalier King Charles is somewhere between 13 and 18 pounds. It is believed that their size and unique look evolved from crosses with many other breeds, such as the Pekingese, Pug, King Charles Spaniel, and Japanese Chin.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a silky, slightly wavy coat that can come in several color variations. Generally speaking, they have 4 layers which include a longer outer coat, an undercoat, feathering on the legs, ears, chest and tail, and a frill around the neck. The Cavalier's coat is typically thicker and longer around the chest, shoulders and neck area. The overall color of the Cavalier's coat is usually a rich, golden ruby, but the coat can range in color from black to white.
When considering what to feed your Cavalier King Charles, nutrition is key. Unsuitable food items include acidic fruits, sugar-coated foods, human snacks (i.e. chips & candy bars), baked goods, and alcoholic beverages. It's also important to pay attention to the quantity and type of treats that you are giving. Too much regular dog food, while perhaps not damaging to your pup, may cause them to gain excess weight and could even lead to obesity.
The key to being the best puppy parent for a Cavalier King Charles is to be consistent and show lots of love and affection. Start by establishing boundaries and rules while also providing plenty of praise and rewards for desired behaviors. It's also important to provide nutritional meals at the same times every day, as well as a comfortable and safe place for your pup to sleep. Additionally, it's important to use positive training methods, such as clicker training, to help your pup learn basic commands.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels reach an average adult height of 12 to 13 inches at the shoulder and weigh, on average, between 13 and 18 pounds. This makes them a small to medium-sized dog breed; not too small, but still small enough to fit into a lot of living environments. With Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, the potential for both condition and lifestyle can affect their size; they don't typically get any bigger than 18 inches in height and tend to weigh less than 20 pounds.
It is recommended that Cavalier King Charles's receive at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Walking is an important part of this exercise program. Moderate walks of 15 to 20 minutes a couple of times a day is ideal. This is often enough to meet the breed’s daily exercise needs and provide them with adequate enrichment. However, if your Cavalier King Charles appears to have higher energy levels, longer walks are ideal. Additionally, keep in mind that puppies need more exercise than adults.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally a great breed for first-time owners. These friendly, gentle pets are eager to please and extremely loyal. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are very easy to train and require minimal grooming, making them a low-maintenance choice for novice pet owners. Loyal and sociable, these dogs love to play, run, and explore, so they need plenty of exercise and playtime. They also love cuddles, making them an excellent companion for novice owners who may not have time to dedicate to intense training sessions.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be an easy or difficult task depending on how patient and willing you are to teach your dog. This breed is known for being intelligent and eager to please, which can make them easy to train. However, they can also be quite stubborn and energetic, which makes training more of a challenge. Consistency and positive reinforcement are often the best tools for training these dogs. Properly socializing your Cavalier King Charles with other animals and people is also essential for making sure that they are obedient and understand the limits your set.
