Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, or simply Cavalier Kings, are a beloved breed of dogs that have their roots in England. They get their names from being favored by King Charles II, and as such are often being regally adorned with outfits. They are known for being loyal, affectionate, and gentle dogs that make great companions for both adults and children alike. Fun facts about the breed include that they are one of the most popular companion dogs in the world, the smallest of the spaniel breeds, and incredibly friendly towards strangers.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are well known for having a thick, luxurious coat that is incredibly non-shedding and requires minimal grooming. Because of their semi-long coats, Cavaliers do need regular brushing and occasional baths to keep their fur looking its best, however, they do not produce nearly as much dander and hair around the home as most other breeds. Cavaliers are wonderful dogs for people with allergies and those that are looking for a non-shedding breed of dog.
Cavaliers King Charles are known for being remarkably easy to feed and are not picky eaters, but there are certain foods that you should avoid providing to them. Any kind of human food should be kept away from them, as it can cause gastronomic studies and other health issues. Additionally, it is important to make sure to not feed them bones or any other objects that can cause a choking hazard. Fruits and vegetables should be introduced to their diet in moderation to avoid any digestive issues. High fat and sugar foods should be completely avoided, as they can also lead to obesity and teeth problems.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Cavalier King Charles requires commitment and care. Many new owners want to do the best they can for their new pet, but may need guidance along the way. It is important to provide your pup with regular vet check-ups, proper nutrition, and plenty of exercise. Establishing a daily routine is key, such as scheduled meal times, set potty times, and regular walks. Physical and mental stimulation through interactive play is also essential for a puppy's well-being.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are typically classified as small dogs and usually measure between 12 and 13 inches in height at the shoulders. They can range slightly in size with some adult dogs being as small as 11 inches tall, and some as large as 16 inches tall, but these sizes are considered outside the normal range. Weight-wise, these dogs usually weigh between 13 and 18 pounds, but some can get up to 20 pounds or more.
The amount of exercise you give your Cavalier King Charles should be based on their age, health, and overall activity level. Generally speaking, a healthy adult Cavalier should have at least 30-60 minutes of vigorous daily exercise, although some longer walks and playtime can be beneficial as well. Dependant on your pup, a little less or a little more exercise (in the form of walks or playtime) can be beneficial. If your Cavalier is a senior, then you may want to adjust their exercise levels, as their body may not be able to handle as much activity as before.
Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a very friendly and gentle nature, making them a great companion for kids. They usually love the attention and affection given by young children and are known for being patient with them. However, like any new pet, it's important to properly introduce a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to your child with plenty of positive reinforcement such as treats, affection, and proper training. When supervised, they can typically be trusted to behave around children, but since they are small, energetic animals, it is important to start introducing boundaries early and consistently enforcing them.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be relatively straightforward; however, it will take patience and consistency. Due to their intelligence, they often learn quickly and positively respond to reward-based training techniques. With regular dedication and repetition, you can teach your Cavalier King Charles to obey basic commands such as Come Here, Sit, Stay, and Lay Down. To ensure a successful training experience, be sure to recognize and reward your pup for any progress they make. Additionally, keeping the training sessions short and fun can help keep your pup engaged and motivated.
