Questions & Answers
A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small, friendly, active breed of dog that originated in England. It is categorized as a spaniel that can weigh anywhere between 10-18 lbs. and reach a maximum height of 13-13.5 inches. The breed is known for its floppy ears, a large head, and a flat muzzle. Its coat is thick and luxurious, usually with a large variety of colors, including white, red, black and tan, tricolor, and ruby.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered a hypoallergenic breed. Breeds that are considered hypoallergenic will typically shed very little, thus producing fewer allergens in the air. As a result, people with allergies to pet dander often find these breeds more tolerable than other breeds. Cavaliers, however, can still cause allergies in sensitive people due to the production of other substances such as saliva and urine, which can trigger a reaction. It is best to consult a veterinarian or allergist to understand if a Cavalier will work for your household.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have an appetite for a variety of healthy and natural foods. They typically do best when given a grain-free, high quality dry kibble that contains sources of essential proteins like lamb, chicken, or turkey. It's important to feed them smaller meals two to three times a day, rather than one large meal. This breed also benefits from supplementing their food with wet food, like canned meals or even home-cooked meals that are made up of nutritious proteins, veggies, fruits, and even carbohydrates.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, some essential items you should purchase include a crate or kennel with a snug-fitting bed, chew-resistant leash and collar, food and water bowls, a brush and clippers, food specifically designed for the breed, treats, a comfortable carrier crate for when you need to travel, baby gates to separate the pup away from potentially dangerous areas of your home, and plenty of toys to keep your pup active and entertained. You may also want to install pet health insurance, so you're covered for any unexpected medical treatments your pup may require throughout its life.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) typically grow to around 12-13 inches tall and can weigh between 13-18 pounds when they are fully mature. Depending on the size of their parents, CKCS may vary in size, with some being a bit bigger and some a bit smaller. Generally speaking, they are a medium-sized breed, small enough to fit easily into most lifestyles, but large enough to be easily noticed. These lovely Spaniel's compact yet gentle build make them ideal companions for those who are looking for a loving pet.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels love to swim! They enjoy the sensation of cool water on their fur and the refreshing feeling of their legs paddling in the water. Many of them are natural swimmers, easily taking to the water without requiring too much coaxing or preparation. Whether it be in a pool or pond, deep or shallow, most likely these friendly, sporty, and outgoing little canines will happily take a dip. Furthermore, swimming provides relaxing and fun exercise, helping to deliver the best quality of life possible for the breed.
Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are friendly and get along with most other pets, including cats. They are people-oriented dogs and tend to get along well with other animals in the house. They may bark at other animals as a warning but won't usually attack. With proper introductions and socialization, they typically thrive in multi-pet households and do well with children and other dogs. Cavilers will also bond with other animals in the house, such as birds and rodents.
The amount of minutes needed to train a Cavalier King Charles per day will depend on the age and temperament of your dog. Generally, it's recommended to provide at least 30 minutes of playtime and dog training activities per day. Puppies will need more time than older dogs, as they are more energetic and require more attention. Additionally, if your dog is more nervous or anxious, providing more time to bond and play will help socialize them further and improve their behavior.
