Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are unique because of their rich history. This breed was popularized by King Charles II, who declared that the breed should be a symbol of the king’s loyalty and love for his people. This breed is also known for their big, beautiful eyes and a deep, lovable bark. Along with being a house pet, these dogs are often used in agility events and were even used to accompany World War I soldiers. Although they are small in size, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are brave and loyal, qualities that have enabled them to be favorites of many.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not generally known to be hypoallergenic because they do tend to shed quite a bit. While they can cause less irritation than some other breeds due to their low-dander coat, their shedding still makes them prone to triggering allergies in some individuals. Therefore, those with allergies should consider other hypoallergenic breeds, such as the Irish Water Spaniel, Bichon Frise, or Shih Tzu when looking for a dog companion.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should not be fed certain foods, as they can be dangerous for them. People foods, such as avocados, onions, raisins, macadamia nuts, chocolate and candy are all toxic to Cavaliers, so these should definitely be avoided. Additionally, calcium-rich foods, such as bones or dairy, can be dangerous, as they can lead to the formation of bladder stones. It is best to stick to a good quality, soy-free, grain-inclusive kibble that is specifically designed for the breed.
Cavalier King Charles require regular physical exercise, an appropriate nutritional diet, grooming, vaccinations, and vet visits. Additionally, it is important to provide the proper socialization and training for a Cavalier King Charles early in life. A good quality dry dog food formulated for a small breed and supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables will meet their nutritional needs. Grooming should include regular brushing and professional clipping as needed. Vaccinations should be given according to the recommendations from the vet and include heartworm and flea prevention, as well as any other recommended treatments.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are small to medium in size, typically weighing between 12-18 pounds. Their height can range from 12-14 inches depending on the breed. Coat color can be black and tan, ruby, or tri-color (black, tan, and white). As far as size goes, there is no difference between males and females. They typically have long, silky ears and a sweet, gentle, and devoted temperament. They make wonderful family pets, often forming strong bonds with their owners.
Walking your Cavalier King Charles for at least a few minutes per day is an important part of maintaining its health and well-being. Generally, it's recommended that an adult Cavalier King Charles should walk for 30 minutes per day, broken up into two 15-minute sessions if possible. If your Cavalier King Charles is still a puppy, it's important to start with shorter, slower walks and increase the duration and intensity as your dog grows and its endurance increases.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are good with kids! These gentle, loving dogs have been bred specifically to be a loyal companion and they are known for their social and amiable personalities. Given the right environment, they should get along great with kids; however, it’s important to establish boundaries and provide training to ensure that everyone is comfortable. It’s also beneficial to supervise the interactions between your pet and your children, especially when they are very young.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are very intelligent dogs and can be quite clever. With regular positive reinforcement training, they learn commands and tricks quickly, and they are eager to please their owners. They are also very sensitive and can pick up on subtle changes in their environment or within the family. Plus, their loving personality and propensity to bond closely with their owners makes them a great pet choice if you're looking for a loyal companion.
