Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are small yet sturdy dogs with a friendly and gentle temperament. They are also highly intelligent, loyal, and devoted to their owners. This breed requires frequent exercise and companionship. As a small dog of the toy variety, they have a lifespan of 9 to 14 years and average weight of between 13 to 18 pounds. Grooming needs are minimal, as long as their coats are maintained. Calm by nature, these dogs make great family pets as they thrive on human interaction.
Many owners of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels claim that their breed is hypoallergenic. While this may be true for some people, it's important to note that all dogs produce some form of dander and saliva, which cause allergies in people who are sensitive to them. Some believe that the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's coat is naturally non-allergenic, but this simply isn't true. Because the breed does not shed as much as some other breeds, they can be good for those with mild allergies, but they should not be considered hypoallergenic.
It is important to avoid feeding Cavalier King Charles anything that is not approved for dogs, such as chocolate, caffeine, onions, and macadamia nuts. Anything cooked or smoked, such as bacon, sausages, and deli meats, should also be avoided as it can cause gastrointestinal diseases in dogs. Some snacks to avoid are cheese, popcorn, raw eggs, and garlic, as these all can cause vomiting, malnutrition, and other serious health problems.
It is important to prepare for your new Cavalier King Charles before they arrive in your home. Researching the breed and its needs ahead of time can help you ensure you provide the best care possible for your new pet. Reach out to your veterinarian to ask any questions you may have. Get to know your pet's needs and create a plan on providing them with the proper nutrition, exercise habits, and medical care. Make sure your home is ready for your new pup! Furnish it with comfortable napping spots, food and water bowls, toys, and other necessary items.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four sizes: Toy, Dwarf, Miniature, and Standard. The Toy size is the smallest, and usually stands less than 12 inches in height and weighs 4-8 pounds. The Dwarf size is the second smallest, and tends to be between 12-13 inches tall and weigh 8-12 pounds. The Miniature size typically stands between 13-14 inches tall and weighs between 12-18 pounds. The Standard size stands greater than 14 inches tall and can weigh up to 18 pounds or more.
How much exercise your Cavalier King Charles should have depends on their individual health and activity level. Generally speaking, it's recommended that they have at least thirty minutes of exercise and activity every day. Depending on your own level of activity and the dog's comfort, you may choose to increase the duration up to an hour or even longer. You may want to break up the walk into two or more walks throughout the day, adding up to the total of thirty minutes to one hour per day.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) are a delightful and friendly breed, and they have plenty of love to share with kids. Generally, they do get along very well with children, given their gentle and loving natures. An important factor in how well they get along with kids would be of course, how you raise them, and what kind of socialization and early training they receive. When properly socialized and around children since they were puppies, these dogs usually create strong bonds with kids.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are classified as an intelligent breed of dog, making them quite capable of learning commands and tricks. However, they have an independent streak and will often do things their own way. This means that, while they can be quite smart, they may not always be the best choice for an obedience trial or highly advanced tricks. Intelligent as they may be, they also have the capacity for leadership, making them great family pets as they will strive to keep their pack in order. This makes them great for families where parents are looking for a pet to be an example for the children.
