Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles is a small spaniel breed of dog that originated in England. This breed is known for its friendliness, playfulness, and love of cuddling. It has a silky coat that can come in four different colors: black and tan, ruby, blenheim, and tricolor. The breed is known for being gentle, affectionate, and easily trainable, making it an ideal companion dog. It has an active and energetic personality and is great for children as well as adults.
The Cavalier King Charles breed has a wonderfully silky, slightly wavy coat that comes in three distinct and beautiful colors: Blenheim (chestnut and white marking), ruby (rich mahogany red), and Tri-color (black and white, with tan markings over face, ears, and feet). The smooth fur is soft to the touch and medium in length, with an easy-to-care-for texture that rarely mats or tangles. Even if not trimmed, the Cavaliers' luxurious coats look magnificent.
You should avoid feeding your Cavalier King Charles things like processed and packaged foods, human treats, feel, raw eggs, raw meat, dairy products, chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions, avocados, and spices. These items can hurt their digestive system or cause serious harm when ingested. Additionally, it is important to remember that Cavalier King Charles are particularly prone to obesity if given too much food, so be sure to feed them a regular, balanced diet that is portioned out correctly. Lastly, avoid giving them table scraps, as these can be especially unhealthy for them.
Before deciding to get a Cavalier King Charles, there are certain essentials you should purchase as it is crucial for your pup's health and wellbeing. Of utmost importance is a collar with a leash, toys, food and water bowls, and dog food formulas that have been approved by a veterinarian. Additionally, items such as doggy beds, blankets, chew toys, a brush, nail clippers, and treats are essential so your pup is happy and comfortable. It is important to also have pet health paperwork, such as vaccine and health certificates, as well as flea and tick preventatives.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s are considered a small-sized breed. Adults range in size from 12-13 inches at the shoulder when full-grown and can weigh between 13-18 pounds – although some may be on the heavier side. Their ears, eyes, and muzzle are all proportionately sized in relation to their overall size. This allows the Cavalier to maintain a balanced silhouette. They have a short coat that is smooth and silky to the touch and usually come in ruby, black and tan, or tri-color.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels require a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise per day. This can range from a light to moderate jog, walk, or playtime. This should be done in order to keep the dog healthy and in shape. The breed is an intelligent and active one, and loves to go on long walks or runs, play with toys, and receive regular daily activity. Additionally, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should never be put through strenuous activities that reach levels beyond normal healthy performance capacity due to their diminutive size and joint health.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are friendly and get along well with other household pets. With the proper training and socialization, Cavaliers often become bonded to cats, fellow dogs, and other animals they consider part of the family. While it is not uncommon for two family pets to become close friends, you should always be mindful of introducing any new pet into the home, regardless of breed. Proper introductions, ample exercise, and plenty of interactive play time will provide a healthy and loving environment for all of the animals in the house.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be relatively easy with patience and consistency. Cavalier King Charles’s are smart and usually respond quickly to positive reinforcement-based training. It is helpful to start with simple commands such as sit, stay and come, and use treats to reward successful behaviors. When providing corrections, it's important to remain calm and gentle, and focus on teaching the dog the desired behavior. It is also important to take regular breaks during longer training sessions to reduce the chances of boredom.
