Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles are a toy spaniel class breed of dogs known for their friendly, gentle temperaments and luxurious, silky coats. These loyal, family companions have a flat face, a deep chest, and a long muzzle. They make wonderful companions due to their warm personality and their small yet sturdy size. The average Cavalier King Charles weighs about 12-18 pounds and stands about 12-13 inches tall at the shoulder. They have an expressive face with a large, round eye and silky ears.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not considered hypoallergenic because they are a long-haired breed and have a moderate to heavy shedding coat, which many people are allergic to. However, with proper care and grooming, they can help reduce the amount of dander and other allergens in the air. While it's impossible to completely eliminate allergens, there are ways to manage them and reduce the effects of them. It is recommended to vacuum and dust often, use air purifiers, and shampoo your Cavalier King Charles often to minimize the presence of allergens in the air.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have the same dietary needs as other dogs. They can eat high quality wet, dry, or frozen food as long as it meets their particular nutritional requirements. For instance, they may need more protein and fat than is found in some standard foods, so be sure to read the labels closely. Also, these lovely dogs are at risk for dental diseases, so it is important to ensure the food contains some crunchy ingredients to help clean and strengthen their teeth as they chew.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs do have some special requirements to consider. First off, they need plenty of quality time with their humans and room to move around and exercise. It's important that they get regular socialization, plenty of activity like walking and running, and quality playtime to ensure they have a good temperament. While their nutritional needs are about the same as any other breed of dog, special attention needs to be paid to their coat care. Regular grooming, clipping of their nails, brushing, and avoiding excess bathing are all important to keep them healthy and happy.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in two standard sizes: Toy and Standard. Toy Cavalier King Charles Spaniels stand between 12-13 inches and should weigh between 8-14 pounds. Standard Cavalier King Charles Spaniels stand between 13-16 inches and should weigh between 13-18 pounds. Size does not necessarily indicate health, though puppies should be weighed and measured to monitor growth. Depending on the breeder, puppies may be either microchipped or tattooed to identify them, and may come with a pedigree chart and puppy contract.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need a moderate amount of exercise, which can take the form of both mental and physical stimulation. On average, they should receive half an hour of exercise per day, split into two sessions. Mental exercise is important and can include anything from training exercises and playtime to daily walks where the pet can peak objects in their surroundings and receive relaxation and stimulation from you.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a gentle and friendly nature that makes them compatible with other pets in the household. However, they may be competitive with other animals of the same sex. Studies suggest that they may feel threatened by other dogs and cats during introductions, so early and slow socialization is crucial to maximize the chances of a successful coexistence with other pets. Nevertheless, there have been plenty of cases where Cavaliers have gotten along very well with other household animals.
Training your Cavalier King Charles can be a rewarding experience if done right. A good starting point is socialization, allowing your pup to become comfortable with people, places, and animals outside their home. Start with short outings and introduce your pup to a variety of experiences. You will then want to establish basic obedience commands such as “sit” and “come”. Use positive reinforcement and treats to reward your pup when they've done something correctly. As you progress, you can add more complex commands, such as “stay” and “leave it”.
