Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's are a breed of toy-sized spaniel that is especially popular in the United States and United Kingdom. They have a gentle and loyal temperament which makes them great companions. They are relatively low maintenance, but still need regular exercise, brushing, and most importantly, socialization. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four different colors – Blenheim, Black and Tan, Ruby, and Tricolor – and it is considered good form to refer to the breed as either 'Cavalier King Charles' or 'CKCS'.
It is often suggested that any type of pet may cause allergies due to their fur, dander, and/or debris they bring into the home or environment. However, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a low-shedding breed and many owners do not experience any allergenic reactions related to the presence of the dog. While some people may be more sensitive to certain breeds than others, it's not likely a Cavalier King Charles will cause allergies.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are sensitive to many foods, so it's best to stick to a limited ingredients diet that is designed for a canine's digestive system. Avoid any food that contains artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, or sweeteners. Additionally, do not give the dog chocolate, onions, caffeine, avocado, macadamia nuts, grapes or raisins, as they can all be toxic. Alcohol, raw eggs, raw meats, dairy, and fatty or spoiled foods should also be avoided.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s have some specific requirements for their care and training. They need daily brushing to keep their coat clean and free of mats. They’re also very active and need plenty of exercise, so walks and play time should be part of their daily routine. Proper socialization is also important – Cavaliers typically have a very friendly temperament, but they can still benefit from being around people and other animals. Good nutrition and veterinary care are also important for keeping them healthy and happy. Grooming and dental care should take place routinely in order to maintain their coat and teeth.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels generally range between 12 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder when fully grown. The size of a Cavalier King Charles in terms of weight is between 13 to 18 pounds (6 to 8 kg) when fully mature. They are considered to be a Small Toy Breed, so they should remain small in stature regardless of their age. They are a sturdy and muscular breed, with a moderate length of head and deep chest. Despite their diminutive size, their appearance gives off the impression of an alert, sprightly, and happy dog.
The amount of time needed to walk a Cavalier King Charles each day is a personal decision that you will need to make based on your pup's age and activity level. Generally speaking, 20-30 minutes is a good rule of thumb for an adult dog, but this could be split into either one or two chunks depending on your pup's individual needs. Puppies between 8-12 weeks should be walked for around 15 minutes, gradually building up to the 20-30 minute range when they're older.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs have a pleasant disposition and tend to get along well with other pets, including cats, birds, and small mammals. They are social creatures who love to be around people and other animals. They are people-oriented, so they often take to their companions quickly, but each pet has its own individual temperament so it's best to get to know them before introducing other animals into the home. Training can help them learn how to get along with other animals and they will typically do well in a multi-pet household if their owners provide a safe and comfortable environment for them.
Training a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can be a relatively easy task but is dependent on a number of factors. Early socialization and consistent, positive reinforcement-based training are important components to setting the dog up for success. If a Cavalier King Charles has been given the right tools early on and conditioned to expect and respond to clear commands, then the task of its training should be quite straightforward and even enjoyable. As with any breed, training should be undertaken with patience and kindness for the best outcomes in order to ensure a bond of trust and friendship.
