Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are descended from royalty, having been favored for their loveable nature by King Charles II of England in the 1700s. They have an incredibly affectionate personality and are the perfect breed for a family companion who loves people. They have been known to excel in obedience trials and agility contests too! Their beautiful coats are long and silky, and they come in four different colors — black & tan, ruby, tricolor and blenheim. Though they are small, these dogs can be surprisingly vocal and have a tendency to bark at people to get attention.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do produce dander, which is one of the main allergens that affect people. However, they do not shed in the same manner as many other breeds of dogs; they do not have thick coats and as a result, their dander levels may be lower than that of other breeds. Ultimately, whether or not a Cavalier King Charles is hypoallergenic depends on the individual and how their body responds to the dander.
There are a few things that owners of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should not feed their canine friend. Generally, processed meats, table scraps or bones that may have been cooked, all-purpose food, fatty cuts of meat, sweets, and human snacks should be avoided. Certain fruits like grapes and raisins can be toxic and should be avoided as well. Rawhide chews, toys, and bones should also be avoided; these items are not easily digestible and can become lodged in the pet's throat or cause intestinal blockage.
Before bringing home your new Cavalier King Charles, it's important to prepare your home in order to make the transition as safe and comfortable as possible. First, get the right supplies. This should include food and water bowls, a warm bed, plenty of chew toys, a brush for grooming, and a collar with ID tags. Removing any potential hazards such as wires, breakables, and toxic substances is also important.
Although Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically weigh between ten and eighteen pounds and stand twelve to thirteen inches shoulder height as adults, it can be said that they are considered big dogs. This is because, although they may not be very large frame wise, they have personalities that are larger than life and make wonderful pets for those with an affinity for active, energetic, and fun-loving dogs. Furthermore, they need regular exercise to stay healthy, they have their own unique needs when it comes to housing, grooming, and diet, and are known for being loyal, affectionate, and cheerful.
The amount of daily walking for any type of dog, including the Cavalier King Charles, should be tailored to the individual pup. Generally, at least 30 minutes per day is recommended. However, for Cavaliers, 30 minutes would be the minimum – they truly have plenty of energy and need more time than that to stay healthy and active. A good guideline to help you determine how much to walk your Cavalier King Charles would be at least an hour per day. This time can be spread out into two or three separate walks, or you can take your dog for one longer walk.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels get along very well with children due to their even temperament and incredible sociability. They possess a gentle grace and won't be timid when handling children. Their mellow nature, combined with their eagerness to please, makes them an ideal choice for a family pet. Cavaliers are known for being extremely friendly with everybody, and kids are no exception. They will be patient with children, allowing them to pet and play with them without being aggressive. They may even follow them around and share in their adventures.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are often considered to be one of the most intelligent breeds of dogs. They are quick learners and often recall commands and tricks with ease. They respond well to positive reinforcement and loving guidance, so with proper training and socialization, they can be highly trainable and loyal companions. Increased stimulation and consistency are key in helping to develop and maintain their intelligence. With proper attention, they can learn a variety of commands, tricks, and behaviors. Overall, they can be considered smart dogs if given proper care.
