Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a charming and fluffy breed of dog that was popularized by King Charles II of England in the 1600s. One unique fact about these dogs is that they only have velvet ears the rest of their body is made up of long, silky fur. This breed is quite intelligent and loves to please its owners, making them great family pets. Cavaliers are known for their mild, sweet temperament and friendly disposition. They are also fearless and courageous and have been known to bark at much larger animals if they feel their family is in danger.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are typically considered a low shedding breed. They have a medium-length silky coat that does not require excessive grooming. While they are considered non-shedding, they do require regular brushings to maintain their coat and help keep them from getting matted. They may blow their coat twice a year, which is normal and can require frequent brushings during this time. It's important to also keep up with regular nail trimmings to prevent the nails from becoming too long.
Owners should avoid feeding Cavalier King Charles anything that is high in fat, sugar or salt, as this can lead to obesity, diabetes and digestive problems. Table scraps, alcohol and xylitol-sweetened foods, such as flavored gums and mints, are also not suitable for a Cavalier King Charles’s diet. Additionally, human vitamins, especially those with a higher level of Vitamin D, can be toxic to the breed. Floral bulbs such as daffodils, tulips and onions are also toxic.
Although Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's tend to have a mild temperament, they do have some specific requirements that should be taken into consideration. They need companionship, regular exercise and grooming. They are very sensitive and do not do well in a kennel situation so they need to be with their owners as much as possible. Grooming should include brushing their long coat of fur, once or twice per week, to avoid matting and potential skin irritations. Exercise should be daily, if possible, including long walks, play time and interaction with other dogs for socialization.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are typically considered a medium-sized breed, typically weighing between 11 18 pounds and measuring 13 16 inches tall at the shoulder. However, their size can vary depending on factors such as genetics and diet, so some individuals may be larger or smaller than the average. Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not considered big dogs and are better suited for a life of leisure than more active dog breeds, due to their size and structure. Despite their small stature, their regal appearance and loving personalities have earned them a place in the hearts of many.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are incredibly versatile little dogs that absolutely love to exercise and play. As such, they typically enjoy playing in the water, and many of them thoroughly enjoy swimming. Longer-coated pets do, however, need to be properly groomed before entering the water to ensure their fur stays in good condition after swimming. It's best to slowly introduce your pet to swimming, starting in shallow waters and slowly increasing the depth of the water. With patience and care, your Cavalier King Charles will likely come to love swimming!
Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are gentle and friendly dogs that get along extremely well with kids. They have a naturally sweet and placid disposition which makes them a great fit for households with children. Often times, Cavies form a close bond with the whole family. They're friendly with everyone, so they're sure to be a great addition to a family, especially with kids. With the right training, they can even learn how to follow instructions from little ones. They can be the perfect companion to play with and keep kids occupied.
Training your Cavalier King Charles is essential to developing a well-rounded, healthy, and obedient companion. Start by forming positive relationships with reinforcement-based training methods like rewards and praise. Depending on your pup's age, you may want to consider enrolling in puppy classes which focus on socialization, learning basic commands, and fun activities such as retrieving. Keeping training sessions short and conducted nearby can help reduce distractions and keep your pup focused. Be patient, consistent, and use positive reinforcement to practice commands, behavior modification, and even tricks.
