Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a small, friendly breed of toy spaniels that are considered a lapdog. They are spirited, friendly, and intelligent and quickly become an important part of the family. They have a long, silky coat that will require regular brushing to keep it from matting and regular grooming to keep it looking its best. Cavaliers are very active and need plenty of love, attention, and exercise to keep them happy and healthy. They are social and gentle dogs that get along famously with people and other animals.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKCS) are historically known for being low-shedding and light shedders, so most owners would deem them as non-shedding. But this does not mean that they don't shed at all. Coats and undercoats can change in texture and become thicker or thinner seasonally, and when that happens, the CKCS will still shed quite a bit, putting some owners off this breed.
It is important to avoid giving your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel a wide range of foods in order to prevent potential health problems and allergies. It is especially important to stay away from any 'people food'; while some human food may be okay in small amounts for your pet, it is not recommended to feed them most human foods. Additionally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should never consume chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, or anything containing artificial sweeteners like Xylitol as these can be toxic or cause stomach upset.
Preparing for a new Cavalier King Charles should include ensuring your home and environment is ready for your pet. This may include dog-proofing any areas that the pup may enter, stocking up on appropriate food and treats, and purchasing any toys or supplies they’ll need such as a bed, collar, and leash. It's also important to have a vet lined up and to research any health and wellness plans they may offer. Obedience classes and puppy socialization activities are recommended since the Cavalier King Charles is a sociable breed.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically reach a height of 12-13 inches and a weight of 13-18 pounds when fully grown. They are considered a small breed of spaniel and are one of the smallest members of the toy group. Although their size can vary, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels generally stay within these measurements throughout their life. The perfect companion for any family, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have an elegant, graceful and friendly personality that endears them to many.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are both loving and adventurous, making them natural swimmers. In fact, many Cavalier King Charles owners find their pups absolutely adore the water and will often love to wade or even take a full-on dip making them ideal canine companions on hot summer days. With their strong, powerful legs and webbed feet, they are surprisingly natural swimmers. While it is important to ensure that a Cavalier King Charles never tires themselves out while in the water, their enthusiasm for swimming and willingness to please can make them an ideal doggie swim buddy.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels tend to be well-suited for families with children as they are generally sweet-natured, gentle and affectionate dogs. With properly supervised and socialized interactions between a Cavalier and the children in a home, these two can usually get along quite well. However, it is important to remember that young children may not be aware of a dog's own comfort level or boundaries, and may need to be taught how to properly interact with a pet.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be a challenge, but it is certainly possible. As a breed, they are known for being highly intelligent, quick learners, and gentle. Since they are so people-oriented, they crave attention and will eagerly learn to please their owners. Consistency is key when training; it's important to make sure to use the same commands and gestures every time, as well as maintaining a consistent reward system. With consistent effort and lots of patience, it is not difficult to have a well-trained Cavalier King Charles that is a joy to be around.
