Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Cavalier King Charles Spaniels is that they have been around since the 16th century, but only officially became a breed in the 1920s. They are incredibly adaptable and can fit into almost any lifestyle, making them a great companion for any kind of home. They have a sensitive and intelligent personality and make loyal friends. They are also known and loved for their eagerness to please and their warm-hearted affection. They also have a unique appearance with their long, droopy ears, large eyes, and signature silky coat.
It is not likely that you will experience allergies due to having a Cavalier King Charles. While the breed may have a higher propensity for allergies and other health issues, these allergic reactions would be no different than those in any other breed since they are typically brought on by a sensitivity to dander, fleas, or certain foods. Allergy symptoms could include red, itchy eyes, sneezing, and a runny nose.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are part of the toy breed group and have small mouths with short, blunt muzzles, which makes them extremely selective when it comes to food. They do best with high quality, grain free puppy food but they also enjoy treats and occasional table scraps. For treats, you can offer them freeze-dried meat products, healthy dog treats, rawhide chews and puppy-specific treats. Be sure to feed your Cavalier King Charles puppy food formulated for their small breed size.
Cavalier King Charles do have some special needs, although they do not require a great deal of special treatment. Grooming is essential for keeping their coats healthy and tangle-free, and regular tooth brushing will help maintain dental hygiene. Besides daily grooming, Cavalier King Charles should be taken on regular walks, provided with a quality diet, and monitored for any signs of health problems. Being a toy breed, they also need to be supervised when played with, and certain forms of exercise should be avoided due to their unique anatomy.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in only one size, however, they can range in weight, depending on gender. Female Cavaliers usually weigh between 13 and 18 pounds whereas males weigh from 15 to 18 pounds. The American Kennel Club breed standard for a healthy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is from 13 to 18 pounds and the ideal size should be no lighter than 13 pounds or heavier than 18. Despite the one size classification, Cavaliers come in varying colors including: Blenheim, Tricolor, Black & Tan and Ruby.
Yes, you can take your Cavalier King Charles running, but bear in mind it is a breed that needs plenty of rest, or they can easily become overexerted. Taking your pup out for a run is a great way to get it the exercise it needs, but make sure you do not overdress your pup and adjust for its size and body shape. The Cavalier King Charles is a moderately active breed, so try to keep its running sessions short and varied so that it does not become tired easily.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are cheerful, intelligent and loyal companion dogs that can get along very well with kids. They are friendly and enjoy attention, cuddles and playtime. Cavaliers have a very gentle nature and are eager to please, often making them respond very well to training. They also tend to be patient and tolerant with children, making them an ideal family pet. Cavaliers are generally tolerant of other animals, so they can co-exist well with animals that are already in the home.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as it really depends on the age and physical condition of the Cavalier King Charles. Generally, experts recommend engaging in at least 15 minutes of physical activity such as running, walking, or playing catch each day for this breed. Of course, depending on your puppy's energy level, you may need to adjust the amount of exercise. Additionally, mental stimulation through activities like scent work, obedience training, and dog puzzles are great ways to provide the Cavalier King Charles with extra enrichment.
