Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a beloved and lively breed of toy size spaniels from England. One fun fact is that they have been a long-time favorite of British Royalty; King Charles II is known to have given his namesake to a breed that had been created centuries earlier and the Royal family still considers this breed of the royal house. They are known to be friendly and easily excitable; they have a great desire for attention and will quickly become family friends. They are an independent and intelligent breed, able to learn quickly and understand their human family.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is often seen with a flat, silky coat of long and smooth fur. Typically, it is found in a range of colors including black and tan, Blenheim, ruby, tri-color and black and white. The hair can be either long and straight or fluffy and wavy, and under adequate grooming and care, the coat should have a natural shine. This breed enjoys excellent health and often comes with beautiful features, like a gentle, intelligent and no-nonsense expression, and a strong, proportional, and well-balanced body.
Providing a nourishing and balanced diet to Cavalier King Charles is essential to their well-being and should be a priority for any owner. This breed is likely to eat just about anything you put in front of them, which can result in becoming overweight, so it's important to stay mindful of what is being fed. It is not recommended to feed them any type of human food, especially anything containing chocolate, grapes, raisins, garlic, and onions, as well as foods that are high in fat or sodium.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Cavalier King Charles requires commitment and knowledge. Beyond providing the basics such as proper nutrition, consistent exercise, and proper veterinary care, take the time to educate yourself about the breed's behavior, temperament, health, and grooming needs. Spend as much time as possible with your puppy to help establish trust and provide them with the necessary socialization to help your puppy become the best possible version of themselves. Keep up with basic obedience training to understand and control your pup’s behaviors while building a strong connection between the two of you.
As Cavalier King Charles puppies usually grow to be between 12-15 inches tall, up to 18 pounds once fully grown, the exact size of your specific puppy is impossible to accurately predict. Factors such as nutrition, exercise, and genetics will all play a role in the ultimate size of your pup. Generally, male pups tend to reach larger sizes than females.
The recommended amount of exercise for a Cavalier King Charles varies based on the individual health and age of the dog, its activity level, and the owner's experience with the breed. Generally speaking, these dogs need at least moderate exercise, and a good rule of thumb is to plan on walking your Cavalier King Charles for at least 45 minutes per day. This should be spread out throughout the day and could include a combination of walking, running, swimming, or even special agility training.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can make great pets for first-time owners, as they are generally known to be friendly and affectionate. They are also fairly obedient, so they are fairly easy to train if given the right guidance and direction. This breed may require relatively low-maintenance grooming, making them easier to care for than some other breeds. They are also known to be a calm breed, preferring to go with the flow rather than bark and act out aggressively.
Training any dog, including the Cavalier King Charles spaniel, requires patience, consistency and love. Although some breeds may be easier than others, no dog's training is going to be simple. That said, the Cavalier King Charles can be a rewarding and enjoyable breed to train as they are gentle and intelligent. They are eager to please and can learn fairly quickly by applying positive reinforcement techniques. To keep the training process interesting and engaging, it is advised to mix up the training methods so your pup doesn't get bored.
