Questions & Answers
A Cavalier King Charles is a breed of toy dog that is an excellent companion. Named after King Charles II, this breed originated in the United Kingdom in the 1600s. These pooches are characterized by their flat skull, large eyes, and long ears that hang down and give them a friendly and loving demeanor. Noted as being dignified, gentle, affectionate, and moderately active, the Cavalier King Charles is also a remarkably intelligent breed. They are incredibly loyal and thrive in human company, making them great family dogs.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally considered to have low allergen levels and can be a great choice for those with pet allergies. They don’t shed very heavily, and their silky coats require only low to moderate grooming which minimizes potential allergen dispersal. That said, Cavaliers are still dogs and they will still produce allergens, so people with allergies should always take proper precautions if deciding to bring a Cavalier into their home.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels enjoy a diet consisting of high-quality dog food and various treats. Kibble should form the basis of their diet and include proteins, complex carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. While carbohydrates are important for providing energy to fuel their active lifestyles, proteins from sources such as fish, poultry, and meat provide essential amino acids that are necessary for muscle maintenance. Fruits and vegetables, such as spinach, squash, and apples, should also be included in their diet, as they can provide an additional source of nutrients and fiber.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, it is wise to stock up on certain essentials. These include a collar and leash, beds and blankets, food bowls, toys, food, treats, disinfectants and grooming supplies, a crate or playpen, potty materials such as puppy pads and doggy bags, and a variety of cleaning aids. It is also advised to treat your pup to vet visits, pet insurance, nail clippers, vaccines, a microchip, and flea and heartworm treatments.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four sizes: Toy, Blenheim, Tri-Color, and Ruby. Each size has specific measurements that will give you an exact indication of your pet's size. Toy Cavaliers are the smallest variety and stand at no more than 11-13 inches tall at the shoulder. Blenheim Cav Learning Charles rank slightly larger at 12-13 inches, while Tri-Color Cavaliers come in at 13-15 inches. Ruby Cav Learning Charles are the largest, standing at 14-16 inches tall.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can benefit from a range of exercise levels, depending on their age, health, and energy level. Generally, the breed can do well with a regular 30 to 45 minutes walk every day, but they still appreciate other activities, such as running and playtime with their owners. If your pup is over a year old, it is important to keep up with longer walks as needed to keep your Cavalier King Charles in tip-top shape.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are an excellent choice for first-time owners! This friendly, easygoing breed is typically eager to please and loves to spend time with their family. Cavaliers are known to be adaptable, which makes adjusting to a new environment or home much easier. They're happy to be active, but also know how to take it easy and relax, which makes them perfect companions for those new to pet ownership. Furthermore, Cavaliers typically do not need as much grooming or specialized care as some other breeds, making them ideal for first-time pet owners who may be unsure of themselves.
Training a Cavalier King Charles is an important part of maintaining the health and wellbeing of your pup. Depending on your dog's age, health, and breed, the amount of exercise will vary. Generally speaking, most Cavalier King Charles should get about 30 minutes to an hour of exercise each day. If your pup is young, they may need closer to an hour of exercise, while older dogs may be able to do with closer to 30 minutes. Generally walking or a leisurely game of fetch should suffice.
