Questions & Answers
Cavaliers King Charles are a small breed of spaniel most beloved for being friendly and devoted companions. This breed is easy to recognize by their round-shaped faces and long features, with an always merry, gentle expression. Originally bred to be companion dogs for royalty in the Middle Ages, these little dogs are now favorites of a wide range of people. They are a toy breed, typically weighing between 8 and 18 pounds, and they come in four colors: black & tan, ruby, tricolor (black & white & tan) and Blenheim (red & white).
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's have a moderate amount of shedding. They have long, silky coats that require regular grooming and brushing, and are not hypoallergenic. Most owners also note that their fur seems to have a tendency to travel in the air and stick to furniture, clothes and other surfaces. Although they do shed their fur, they are known for being relatively low or average shedders, compared to many other breeds. With proper grooming and the occasional bath, their coats and skin can stay healthy and well-maintained, so they do not shed excessively.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are known to thrive on a diet of high quality, nutritionally balanced food. They can have meals of dry kibble, wet food, or a combination of the two. It is important to consult with a veterinarian on the right diet for the individual pup, as each one's nutritional needs may vary. Some other meals they enjoy can include meat, such as lean proteins like chicken, beef, fish or eggs. Vegetables, such as cooked potatoes, peas or carrots are also a great source of vitamins and minerals.
To properly prepare your home for your new Cavalier King Charles, start by providing plenty of safe, comfortable spaces. Make sure to puppy-proof any areas where the dog may roam, like checking for poisonous materials and making sure cords and electrical outlets are out of reach. Move furniture and items they could potentially chew. Setup a bed and keep it in a quiet spot, as the breed is generally quite sensitive to loud noises. To encourage the pup's good behavior, have a variety of safe toys available, along with stimulating activities. Make sure to establish boundaries and provide discipline as necessary.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four different sizes, ranging from the smallest being the Toy size to the largest, the Ruby size. The Toy size is 10-12 inches tall and typically weighs between 8-14 pounds, while the Ruby size is 12-13 inches tall and weighs 18-19 pounds. The Blenheim size is right in the middle at 11-12 inches and weighs 14-17 pounds. Finally, the Prince size only varies slightly from the Blenheim size 11-11.5 inches tall and weighing 15-16 pounds.
Taking your Cavalier King Charles running is certainly possible, although it is important to ensure that your pup is healthy enough for that type of exercise and that you adequately prepare them for it. Make sure your pup has a check-up with your vet beforehand to make sure you are both on the same page with what type and amount of exercise is appropriate. Also, start by introducing the pup to running at a slow pace and gradually increase the length and intensity over time. Supplying adequate amounts of water and rest will be important as well.
Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are very friendly and have a pleasant disposition that usually enables them to get along well with other pets. While it is possible that a Cavalier may not get along with a different pet due to individual personality traits, with the right introduction and a slow transition, they can usually learn to live happily together. It is important to work with a professional trainer to ensure a proper introduction between a Cavalier King Charles and other pets, and to seek help if any issues arise. If handled correctly, Cavaliers can make wonderful companions for other animals.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be simple or complex depending on your individual goals for the pup and on your experience with dogs. For basic obedience commands, the breed is typically a quick study, and can often be trained with positive reinforcement methods like treats and verbal praise. In addition to house training, the breed can also excel in more structured activities like agility or service dog training with the right kind of guidance and commitment to the pup. At the end of the day, the amount of dedication and consistency owners put in training their Cavalier King Charles will largely determine the success of the program.
