Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are an incredibly beloved breed of dog. Not only are they known for their beautiful coats and cheerful personalities, but they have a few fun facts about them too! For example, they are descendants of toy spaniels that were bred in England in the 1600s. They were very popular among King Charles II and were often painted with him in portraits. They are known to be able to recognize boisterous Puppies playfully barking and other dogs as playmates. Cavaliers thrive with plenty of companionship, whether that's with people or other pets.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered to be non-shedders. They feature a smooth, silky coat which is considered low-shedding. Although this is not a breed that typically sheds heavily, they should still be groomed regularly to maintain their beautiful coat and keep it free of tangles. The shedding of the coat will depend on the individual dog as well as on the climate it is living in. While some Cavaliers may not shed as much as other breeds, they do require a good brushing once or twice a week and should be clipped every four to six weeks.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can be fed a variety of foods that provide them with the correct balance of protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. A high-quality dry dog food should make up the majority of their diet, and you can add in wet food for variety. It is important to find a food that is specifically designed for their size and age, as different sizes and ages of dogs require different amounts and types of nutrition.
An important step to prepare your home for your new Cavalier King Charles is to make sure the area you designate for the pup is safe, comfortable, and inviting. Consider using items such as puppy pads, beds, and covers for furniture that cannot be protected with slip covers. Before your puppy arrives, ensure all areas of your home are free of any potential hazards and home items you don’t want your puppy to have access to. Make sure the new living area is stocked with toys, water bowls, and treats.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four sizes which correspond to the guidelines established by the American Kennel Club. Generally, they are divided into two classifications, based on height. Toy Cavaliers range from 12 to 13 inches tall and weigh between 9 and 12 pounds. The smaller variety, usually referred to as teacup size, ranges between 8 and 11 inches tall and weigh 6 to 9 pounds. On the other end of the spectrum are the larger Cavaliers which are between 13 and 15 inches tall and weigh between 13 and 18 pounds.
The amount of exercise a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel needs on a daily basis varies depending on their age and activity level. Generally, most Cavaliers will need a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise, such as a leash walk, per day. If your pup is still a puppy, then short (5-10 minutes) walks multiple times per day are recommended. As puppies grow and become more active, the time spent on walks should gradually increase. If your fur friend is already full grown, then you should walk it for at least 45 minutes per day, if not more.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are the perfect breed for first-time owners. They are known for their gentle nature, loyalty, alertness and cuteness. Cavaliers are quite sociable and respond well to obedience training, making them ideal family companions. They are fairly low maintenance, as they are an active dog but don't require strenuous exercise. Cavaliers also have minimal shedding and grooming requirements, making them a great choice for people who do not have the time or inclination for heavy-duty upkeep.
Training your Cavalier King Charles is fairly straightforward, but it's essential that you remain consistent in your approach. Start by establishing yourself as the leader and make sure your commands are firm and clear. Offer positive reinforcement when your dog obeys your commands, such as rewarding them with treats or verbal affirmation. Teaching basic commands such as "sit" and "stay" are excellent places to begin, and you should strive to keep the sessions short and pleasant. Repetition and patience are key, as is making sure that your Cavalier King Charles is mentally and physically stimulated throughout its day.
