Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles is a breed of toy spaniel that was developed in the United Kingdom in the 1700s. It is a small, affectionate, and hearty dog with a distinct silky coat that comes in either Blenheim (red and white) or tricolor (black and white with tan markings) variations. Cavalier King Charles are eager to please their owners and are easy to train. They are social and friendly with children and other animals, making them enjoyable family pets. They have a relatively long life span of about 10 to 14 years.
While there is no guarantee that owning a Cavalier King Charles will not cause allergic reactions in its owner, it is important to note that the dog's long, silky coat does not contain the fur that commonly triggers allergic reactions. Many people with allergies are still able to own a Cavalier, as some allergens are caused by a dog's dander and saliva, both of which can still be present in a non-shedding breed. However, it is still important to spend time with a Cavalier before bringing it home to ensure that an allergic reaction does not occur.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a breed that loves food, and have been known to beg, but owners must be careful about what they feed their pooch. Table scraps should be avoided, as they are not intended to provide the nutrition and balance required by a Cavalier King Charles. Some human foods, such as grapes and raisins, can be toxic and should be avoided altogether. Additionally, cookies and food made with onions, garlic, and xylitol can be dangerous. Milk and dairy products can also cause digestive issues in Cavaliers, so these should be avoided.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, it's important to stock up on some essentials to ensure your pup stays happy and healthy. A few must-haves include a well-fitting collar with an ID tag, a safe space such as a crate or puppy playpen, toys to keep your pup entertained, food and water dishes, and all the necessary supplies for grooming. Additionally, you'll need puppy-friendly shampoo, a brush and comb, attempt to look for a reputable veterinarian close to your home, and puppy food formulated specifically for small breed puppies.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their small, friendly size and elegant yet muscular build. Most will grow between 12-13 inches high and weigh an average of 13-18 pounds. This breed comes in four color varieties which include Blenheim, Tri-Color, Black and Tan, and Ruby. Additionally, these puppies have long and silky fur with their coat usually being medium length. This family-friendly breed is the perfect pet for any home size or lifestyle, and can live in apartments or on a larger more rural property.
An ideal goal is to walk your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 30 minutes a day. This should be done at least three times per week, but if your pup is raring to go more often, you should absolutely take them for additional walks. The walks should be varied in length and intensity so that your pup regularly engages in some exercises and stimulus. And don't forget to take breaks for your pup to explore and engage in their natural activities such as sniffing, exploring, and fetching.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels make excellent family companions. They have a playful disposition and enjoy spending time with their owners. They are very sociable and easy to train, making them a great fit for families of all ages and sizes. When properly socialized, they can be very gentle and intuitive with children, understanding their individual needs. They also get along well with other pets. Cavaliers require daily attention and exercise, but they are not overly active and can adjust to any lifestyle.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be quite easy depending on various factors. Chief among them is the type of temperament your Cavalier has as there are two: active and more placid. Though both can be trained well, the active temperament requires more effort and patience. As with any training endeavor, establishing a regular routine is essential for success. Additionally, including positive reinforcement in the form of food rewards or verbal praise can help to further encourage your Cavalier. Above all else, make the training process enjoyable for both you and your pup by having patience and remaining consistent.
