Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a breed of small-sized dogs that originated in the 1600's. They are great family dogs since they are easy-going and love being around people. They are also great with children and other pets. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have long floppy ears and a silky, wavy coat of fur that generally comes in black and tan, red, ruby, black or tricolor. When it comes to exercise, they do enjoy plenty of playtime and regular walks.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are minimally shedding breed, meaning they produce significantly less hair than other breeds of comparable size. The breed has an extremely inoffensive, hypoallergenic coat that most people find unusually easy to groom. By regularly brushing their coat and trimming their nails, a Cavalier King Charles can remain virtually non-shedding, only releasing the occasional hair and dander. Generally speaking, the shedding of these dogs is so minimal that homeowners hardly have to worry about cleaning up any type of mess that may be left behind.
Feeding the wrong food or treats to a Cavalier King Charles can lead to health problems and even shorten its life expectancy. As such, it is important to be aware of what you should not provide your pup with. Specifically, avoid items that are high in fat and artificial ingredients, such as store-bought human food, sugary candy, processed snacks, raw meat and uncooked bones. Instead, stick to dry, low-calorie treats and dog foods that are nutritionally balanced and contain enough protein to support their needs.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Cavalier King Charles can be a rewarding experience! One of the most important aspects of being a responsible puppy parent is having patience and consistency. Taking the time to set up routines and showing a patient attitude while training will help your puppy learn good habits. Additionally, it's important to provide regular love and affection, as well as providing them with appropriate environmental enrichment such as toys, treats, and plenty of chew/gnaw objects. Regular check-ups with your vet and quality nutrition are also critical for your pup's health.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can range in size from 12 to 13 inches tall, weighing anywhere between 13 to 18 pounds when fully grown. This small breed is relatively compact, and they don't require too much room or exercise, making them a great companion for apartments. While these gentle, loving dogs have large eyes and ears, they will always remain small and well-proportioned. As adults, they typically will not exceed 13 or 14 inches in height, making them small enough to comfortably ride in a car, fit on your lap, and travel anywhere you go.
Generally speaking, your Cavalier King Charles needs at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, but the more the better. Walking is an ideal way to give them the physical and mental stimulation they need, as well as to help them stay healthy. Depending on the age and health of your Cavalier King Charles, you should plan to walk them for at least 30 minutes a day split up into two or three walks if necessary but if they're younger or fitter, 45-60 minutes of daily exercise may be more appropriate.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their gentle, loving nature, making them a great companion for families with children. Generally, Cavaliers get along quite well with kids and are more than happy to play and cuddle with them. That being said, this breed does require a bit of training to ensure interactions between them and kids are safe and appropriate. When introducing a Cavalier to children, it's important to take the time to demonstrate to the dog that appropriate behavior is expected towards the young ones.
Training your Cavalier King Charles is important for teaching them good manners, proper obedience, and safety. Cavaliers are known to be very intelligent and relatively easy to train, as they are naturally eager to please. First, it's important to establish yourself as the leader and let your pup know that you are in charge. Give clear commands and stay consistent with your training. Reward your Cahvlier with treats or verbal praise when they follow a command or do a good job and use a "time-out" or other small punishment if they don't.
