Cavaliers King Charles are a friendly, gentle, and adaptable breed, and have an even disposition. They have a strong affinity for people and love to be involved in family life. These active and lively little dogs require a lot of attention, regular exercise, and occasional brushing and grooming. They are also quite social and respond well to basic obedience training. This small breed is known for its melting expression and has been recognized by the American Kennel Club since 1945.
Cavalier King Charles dogs are not inherently hypoallergenic. They are a bred of small to mid-sized dogs with long, dense coats that may cause an allergic reaction in some people. Many people with allergies are still drawn to the breed because their coats tend to be less shedding than other breeds of dogs, but there is no guarantee that the breed will not create an allergic reaction.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels require a balanced diet composed of high quality dry kibble, cooked or raw lean meats, leafy greens, and healthy fats. They also need a regular supplementation of vitamins and minerals to ensure they are getting all the nutrients they require for a long, healthy life. Feeding them 3-4 meals a day works well because they are smaller and can easily become overfed with their tendency towards overeating. Before welcoming your new Cavalier King Charles into your home, it's important to take steps to prepare. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in three size varieties: Toy, Ruby and Blenheim. The size of a Toy Cavalier is usually 12-13 inches in height and between 9-15 pounds in weight. The Ruby Cavaliers are about 13-15 inches in height and about 15-18 pounds in weight. The Blenheims are usually the largest variety, measuring anywhere from 13-18 inches in height and weighing between 15-20 pounds. Each variety can have different coat colors and sizes, so no two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are exactly the same.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are active and playful, so they usually need about 30-60 minutes of exercise each day. This can come in the form of walks, running, and playing fetch. If exercised in a safe, enclosed area, their energetic play needs can be met with activities such as running, fetching, and tugging. It is important to provide your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with ample opportunities to explore, as they are natural explorers. Swimming is also a great form of exercise for these dogs, and they often enjoy swimming in shallow pools and streams.
