Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles is a breed of dog that originated in England. It is known for its beautiful, silky coat and luxurious tresses that are usually found in shades of chestnut, black, tan, and white. They are also known for being very friendly and affectionate, making them an ideal companion for people of all ages. The Cavalier King Charles is a small breed, typically weighing an average of 12-18 pounds. Though they usually have a gentle nature, they can be quite active and are often used in various dog sports.
Although some people can be allergic to dog dander from all breeds of dogs, including Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, there is no guarantee that you will have allergies if you own this breed of dog. Some people may be more sensitive than others and may be more prone to allergies. The best way to determine if you will have allergies is to be tested for different breeds and to talk to your doctor or an allergist to see what will work best for you.
Cavalier King Charles are renowned for their hearty appetite and typically enjoy a balanced diet of high-quality dry food enriched with fruits and vegetables. For added variety, small amounts of canned food, and in some cases, even cooked meat can be included, though these should be avoided if not offered by a veterinary professional. Fresh, clean water should be readily available to help maintain their health. As with most breeds of dog, treats should be avoided, given sparingly, and offer nutritional benefits to the diet.
First and foremost, you should make sure that the home environment is a safe one for your Cavalier King Charles. This means taking the time to inspect the house for any potential hazards, such as cords and other loose items they may chew on, and securing any escape routes, like open windows or gaps in the fence. Once the safety needs are taken care of, you can move onto getting your house ready to suit the needs of your new pet by doing things such as pet proofing–putting away potentially harmful items like cleaners, insecticides, medications, and toxic plants.
While Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are quite small in comparison to most other dog breeds, they are larger than many toy breeds, such as Chihuahuas. Generally speaking, Cavaliers can range from 12-13 inches tall and weigh between 12-18 pounds, making them somewhat hefty for their size. However, they are not considered to be a "large dog breed,” as their small stature is quite commonly associated with lap dogs. That said, their longer-than-average fur does give them a larger appearance, making them appear bigger than they are.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not excessively active dogs. They have a moderate activity level that can suit owners with all levels of activity. While they love a good walk and can happily participate in moderate exercise or organized activities, such as agility or fly ball, they are just as content if the activity is simply cuddles on the couch with their owners. Generally, they do not have excessive energy and so do not require vigorous physical activity.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are certainly good for first-time owners, as they are moderate energy, typically friendly and make great companions. They tend to be gentler than other spaniel breeds, and can be easy to train. Their regal appearance and good humor sets them apart, and they are well known for being very loyal and affectionate. Additionally, they are adaptable to most environments and households and can blend well into almost any lifestyle. The greatest thing for first-time owners is that they have low grooming and exercise requirements.
The amount of minutes per day you need to train a Cavalier King Charles will largely depend on the age of your pup. For puppies, the recommended daily amount of training and play should last about 10-15 minutes per session several times a day. As Cavalier King Charles grow into adulthood, the amount of training should slowly increase, culminating in 20-30 minute sessions several times a day. Ultimately, how much time you spend training your pup is ultimately up to you and your pet's individual needs and capabilities.
