Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an affectionate and delightful breed of small dog that is loved by many. They originated in England and were bred to be the lapdogs of royalty, especially King Charles II. Fun facts about the Cavalier King Charles that may not be so well known are that they were extremely popular as royal lapdogs, due to their seemingly calm nature and willingness to stay close. They were also kept as bird dogs, to hunt for food for the wealthy.
The coat of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is long, silky and feathered, helping to make the breed look irresistibly cuddly, as well as elegant. It may vary in texture, from wavy and light, to straight and profuse. The feathery hair covers the entire head, including the eyes, ears, and frequently the chest and muzzle as well, giving the eyes of the breed an expressive look.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are sensitive and should only eat high quality, balanced meals human grade ingredients are best, as well as organic fruits and vegetables. Avoid feeding rawhide, chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, apple, almond, and cherry seeds that are toxic to dogs. Additionally, try not to give your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel overly salty treats as it can be hazardous to their health. Regular products containing preservatives and additives should be avoided, as well as corn, soy, and wheat, which can be harder for dogs to digest.
Before purchasing a Cavalier King Charles, there are some essential items you should have on hand. First, you should invest in several toys and chews to keep your pet entertained. Next, make sure to purchase a good quality dog bed (or beds if you plan on getting multiple Cavaliers) that is specifically made to provide support and comfort. Additionally, make sure you have a good leash and collar combination, a couple of bowls for food and water, and plenty of treats.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four recognized sizes recognized by the American Kennel Club: Toy, which is the smallest with a height of up to 12 inches and a weight of up to 13 pounds; the slightly larger 'Ruby' size, ranging from 12 to 13 inches tall and weighing between 13 and 18 pounds; the 'Blenheim' size which ranges between 13 to 14 inches tall and 18 to 22 pounds respectively; and the 'Prince' size which goes from 14 to 15 inches tall and with a weight of 22 to 30 pounds.
The amount of exercise your Cavalier King Charles needs depends on their age, health, and size. Generally, you should plan to walk your Cavalier for 30 minutes to an hour daily. If your dog is a puppy, you should start out with shorter walks and slowly build up as they get bigger and stronger. There are also activities such as swimming and playing fetch that can provide the exercise your pup needs. If you can, try to give your Cavalier a variety of activities, from walking to running, to keep them engaged.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can make wonderful family companions due to their sweet, gentle temperament. These lovable pups are known for being great with kids and very loving and loyal to their families. They are often considered an ideal companion for families with children as they are patient, gentle, and eager to please. Not only do they make great companions, but they are also excellent watchdogs. Because they are so loyal to their owners and families, you can count on them alerting you to the presence of any intruders.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally considered to be intelligent dogs. They are descendants of the King Charles Spaniel, and are likely to have the same wit and keenness. They learn quickly and thrive with positive reinforcement. They are eager to please and not overly demanding, which makes them easier to train.
