Questions & Answers
A Cavalier King Charles is a small spaniel breed of toy dogs that originated in the United Kingdom. While similar to the King Charles spaniels of the 1600s, the Cavalier King Charles breed is a distinct type that was developed in the twentieth century. These distinct attributes include a longer nose, larger and more rounded eyes, and a narrower muzzle than King Charles Spaniels. The coat of the Cavalier King Charles is long, silky, and comes in four colors Blenheim, Tri-Color, Black and Tan, and Ruby.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not considered to be a hypoallergenic breed. As with most breeds, they do shed and produce dander, which can cause allergic reactions in some people. Additionally, they are known to have a lot of fur, which can be an issue for people with pet allergies. A hypoallergenic breed would be one with a low release of dander and minimal shedding, which the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel does not have.
A Cavalier King Charles should be given a balanced diet of high-quality dog food that meets all of their nutritional needs. It's best to feed your pooch twice a day while following the instructions that come with the food on the back of the package or tin for the correct portion sizes for their weight. For added variety, you may also consider adding wet food, like a canned food, into their diet as some dogs may find this more appealing. Additionally, you may want to speak to your veterinarian about additional nutritional needs that may benefit your specific pup.
Before bringing your new Cavalier King Charles into your home, there are some things you should prepare. First, make sure that your house is puppy proofed. Make sure all electrical cords are concealed or tucked away, put away any possible choking hazards, and secure any cabinets or drawers that may contain hazardous items. Make sure your yard is secure, as many Cavalier King Charles will try to explore. Next, get proper supplies, including food and water dishes, a bed, and plenty of toys. For safety purposes, attach an ID tag with your contact information to your pup's collar.
Your Cavalier King Charles puppy can reach a maximum height of up to 12-13 inches (30-33 cm) and an average weight of between 12-18lbs (5-8 kg). However, the size of your pup can vary depending on the pup's parents, diet, environment and overall health; and will also continue to grow and develop over the course of their lifetime. To ensure your pup is growing properly, you should talk with a veterinarian to make sure they are developing and gaining weight in a healthy and safe manner.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a moderately active breed that need plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. They are best suited for people who live in an active environment, as they love participating in activities like going for walks, hikes, runs, and playing with their owners. Physical exercise also helps with their mental stimulation, as these dogs need to stay mentally and physically active for optimal health. Generally, a daily walk of at least 30 minutes is recommended, but depending on the individual’s lifestyle and activity energy level, the duration can vary.
Cavaliers King Charles may get along with other pets, but it is not a guarantee. It really depends on the breeds of the other pets, the personality of the individual dogs, and the socialization each one has received. Typically, Cavaliers are gentle, loving, and easy to train, so if they have been socialized to other animals properly, then the chances of them getting along with other pets increase. It is important to remember that each dog can act differently, so getting to know the individual animals before introducing them will help to increase the chances of them forming a harmonious relationship.
Cavaliers King Charles are notoriously intelligent and highly trainable dogs that enjoy learning and pleasing their owners. They are people-oriented and actively seek out human interactions making them great for receiving training. Vocally, Cavaliers can have a wide range of sounds to express themselves, but their eye contact and body language give plenty of indications that they are paying close attention to whatever their owners are saying. Cavaliers can be taught the basic obedience commands, even complex tricks, making them highly capable companions that can be taught various tasks.
