Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles is a small spaniel breed of the toy group. It was heavily favored by King Charles II, and even has portraits of him and his spaniel lovers hanging in the National Portrait Gallery! The Cavalier King Charles boasts silky, wavy coats that come in four accepted colors: Blenheim (a chestnut and white color), Tri-Color (black, white, and tan), Ruby (deep chestnut), and Black and Tan. It has a gentle and affectionate demeanor, with a unique mixture of playfulness, calmness, and obedience.
The Cavalier King Charles coat is quite unique. It is a single layer of long, silky fur, usually in shades of chestnut and white, perfectly complimenting its large, dark eyes. The body is evenly proportioned with a distinctive, domed head, giving it an appearance of sweet innocence. The ears are large and feathered, curling slightly at the tips in a way that truly captures the essence of royalty. The tail is high set and curved, gracefully sweeping along the back.
It's best to avoid feeding Cavalier King Charles food items that are high in fat, sugars, artificial additives, and preservatives. The breed has a tendency to overeat and become overweight, making them more susceptible to health issues. Additionally, you should always avoid giving them table scraps, chocolate, nuts, sour candy, grapes, and raisins, as these can all lead to intestinal distress or other potentially very serious health issues.
Preparing for your new Cavalier King Charles is an exciting process! To begin, research the breed to make sure it's the right fit for you and familiarize yourself with its needs and characteristics. Next, purchase the proper supplies such as a leash, collar, food, and bed or crate. Additionally, familiarize your Cavalier with its new environment by exposing it to new sights, sounds, and experiences. Finally, make sure to provide plenty of mental and physical stimulation, such as socialization and plenty of exercise to keep your pup happy and healthy.
The size of a Cavalier King Charles puppy varies significantly depending on its parents and genetics, but generally these small spaniels will weigh between 10-18 pounds at maturity. Some may grow larger but 16-17 pounds is a common range. The size of the dog is typically proportional to its parentage, so if the parents are larger, the puppy has a greater chance of reaching larger weights. Puppies in this breed range from 12-15 inches in height at the shoulder.
Yes, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels generally enjoy swimming! They are a naturally active breed and as such, often enjoy activities that involve physical exercise. Swimming is a great way for them to get exercise and have fun at the same time. Even if they don't necessarily prefer swimming, it does become quite natural to them if they are frequently exposed. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels tend to have strong hind legs that allow them to swim easily and will even take the initiative of jumping into a pool or lake on a hot summer day.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are well-suited to families with children, as they are known for their gentle and loyal natures. These dogs do particularly well when socialized to other children, animals, and adults at a young age, and they will generally get along fantastically with anyone under the right circumstances. The breed is also known for being especially patient and loving, making them an ideal companion for children. The Cavalier King Charles is also quite active and loves to be a part of family activities – perfect for families with active lifestyles.
The exact amount of minutes per day that you need to train your Cavalier King Charles will depend on the age of the dog and the skills you would like them to learn. In general, however, your Cavalier King Charles will need between 15 minutes and an hour of training per day in order to be well-behaved and to stay up-to-date with newly-learned commands. This does not have to be all at once, as multiple, shorter training sessions are often more effective for such a breed.
