The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small-sized breed of spaniel that originated in England during the 17th century. Named after King Charles II, these lapdogs were bred to be companions and make excellent family pets. They have a silky and long coat of fur, with the distinctive feathering on the ears, chests, legs, and back of the tail. Their coats come in colours of black and tan, ruby, tricolour, and blenheim. Cavaliers are known for their gentle and loving personalities, and are usually very affectionate.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered Hypoallergenic Non-Shedding Dogs as they do not shed much of their coat. These small dogs hardly shed at all and are considered a great choice for those with allergies. Their fur is long and silky and can come in various colors including Ruby, Tricolor, Blenheim and Black & Tan. Additionally, because they have such a naturally beautiful coat, Cavalier King Charleses may require more grooming and brushing than some other breeds. However, they do need regular baths and haircuts to look beautiful and healthy.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a very active breed and, as such, should be given a high quality, balanced diet to ensure they are getting all the nutrients they need. Generally speaking, they enjoy dry food that is geared to their small size and can be supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the day. They should also have access to fresh water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Additionally, some owners may like to give them occasional treats like carrots or apples. It is important to feed them according to their activity and age level as overfeeding can lead to joint and health issues.
Before you bring home your new Cavalier King Charles, it is important to take the necessary steps to make sure your home is prepared. Ensure that any spaces the Cavalier will be spending time in are puppy proofed, with hazardous materials and small items in areas your pup won't be able to reach. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four different sizes: toy, miniature, and two varieties of the standard. Toy Cavaliers reach up to about 12 inches in height and 10 pounds in weight, and miniatures reach between 12 and 13 inches in height and between 12 to 13 pounds in weight. The two varieties of the standard Cavalier reach up to 13 to 14 inches in height and from 15 to 18 pounds in weight.
