Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy spaniel breed that has a rich history of being bred to be companions of the British aristocracy. They belong to the toy spaniel class and are obedient, gentle, and loving pets. They have silky, long coats that come in Blenheim (red and white) and tricolor (black and white with tan markings). Cavaliers have good temperaments, are eager to please, and get along well with other animals and children. They often bond closely with their owners and make excellent companion dogs.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered a low-shedding breed, but not a non-shedding breed. The unique characteristics of their coat require regular care and grooming to ensure healthy skin and an attractive coat. The Cavalier's undercoat is usually groomed out, which can help reduce shedding; however, they will shed year-round, though not heavily. This breed produces coat that is longer and softer than most breeds, and because of this, shedding can be more obvious; but with regular brushing, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can remain neat and attractive.
When deciding on the best food for your Cavalier King Charles, most experts agree that a diet built around premium grade, grain-free, high quality, and human-grade ingredients is best. In particular, "Lifetime feeding" diets, which are designed with the needs of aging dogs in mind, will provide your Cavalier King Charles with the most nourishment and benefit in their later years due to their high protein, low fat and sugar, and moderate carb content.
Before bringing home your new Cavalier King Charles, take the necessary steps to make sure your home is safe and comfortable for them. Start by evaluating your home for any potential hazards. Make sure to remove any small objects, electrical cords, or plants that your pet could potentially chew or swallow. Additionally, it is important to provide a comfortable and soft bedding area for your pet to rest and potential enclosed areas for when they want some peace and quiet. Also, double-check that the temperature of the home is comfortable and that any windows and doors are securely shut.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) are considered medium-sized dogs. They typically weigh anywhere from 13 to 18 pounds, so they are smaller than many other breeds. That being said, when compared to other similarly-sized breeds, the Cavalier King Charles breed is oftentimes considered to be within the bigger range of dogs. Despite their larger size, Cavaliers are known for their gentle and affectionate nature--making them great companions for families. Their sandy, long coats require daily brushing and trimming.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can be enthusiastic swimmers! Many dogs enjoy feeling the freedom swimming provides; plus, it's great exercise. Due to being a medium-sized breed, Cavaliers are often able to enjoy numerous activities, including swimming. However, every dog is different and it's important to ensure that your particular pet is comfortable with the idea of swimming before introducing them to the activity. If swimming is something that your Cavalier has a natural interest in, taking them to a professional trainer is important to ensure that they know proper safety precautions and are having fun in a safe environment.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels make excellent family dogs! They are known to be loyal, kind, and loving. Not only do they get along well with children, wanting to cuddle and play, but are also gentle and patient with adults. They are also highly intelligent, making them easy to train, and they generally enjoy learning new things. Additionally, due to their low energy level, they require very little exercise and are perfectly content to laze around the house all day.
The amount of exercise and training required depends largely on the individual Cavalier King Charles. As a general rule, you should aim to provide a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise per day to your Cavalier King Charles, ensuring that the activity is interactive, adventurous, or challenging. If your Cavalier King Charles is a puppy, or if the breed is new to you, you should begin gradually and build up intensity. You can also provide brain games, puzzle toys, and training sessions to help your Cavalier King Charles stay healthy and mentally stimulated.
