Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a unique breed of dog renowned for their cheerful disposition and sweet, loving companionship. Beyond their temperament, what makes them interesting is their long and storied history with Royalty. They are named after King Charles II who was often seen with these small, white dogs during his reign in the 17th century. Cavaliers are now adored as loyal and devoted family pets, and even celebrities have taken note of their charms. They are also known to gamers as Ghost from the legendary Playstation series, SIE’s Spyro the Dragon.
The Cavalier King Charles coat is quite striking, featuring a medium length, silky texture, and moderately dense layer. It's usually at its most beautiful when left undisturbed and left to its natural length, though some owners opt to keep it trimmed. The coat tends to lack an undercoat and the color can vary widely by breed and even individual dog, ranging from pure white to black and tan, and even a reddish or brown hue.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels require a diet that is higher in fat and protein than for other breeds. For that reason, it is best to look for dog foods that are designed for small breeds and also sport higher levels of fat, protein, and fiber. You also want to look for dog foods containing higher quality ingredients like premium proteins, minerals, and vitamins. Look for food that is free of corn, wheat, and soy and limit the amount of carbohydrates. The best quality dog food is also grain-free and made from higher quality proteins such as salmon and chicken.
Cavalier King Charles are active, high-energy pets that require regular exercise and playtime to maintain a healthy lifestyle. To ensure the best quality of life for your pet, they should receive daily walks, playtime, and mental stimulation, such as enrichment activities like interactive toys and treat dispensers. A nutritious diet is key to maintain their coat and skin health. Grooming should also be included in their day-to-day care, as their long, silky coats can easily become matted if not brushed and maintained regularly.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) generally weigh between 10–18 pounds and stand 12–13 inches tall at the shoulder, making them somewhat of a medium-sized dog. Therefore, they are not considered a small dog breed. However, compared to some larger breeds like the Golden Retriever or German Shepherd, the CKCS is petite. They possess a larger-than-life personality and an active nature, often requiring daily exercise and plenty of mental stimulation. Additionally, the CKCS is popular for their gentle, friendly, and loving nature.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically require about an hour of exercise each day. Taking them for a walk or playing fetch in a safe environment are great ways of providing them with the physical and mental stimulation they need. However, length of walks and periods of play should still be adjusted to the individual needs of your dog. Generally, puppies will need more time for exercise, while older dogs may no longer have the energy for such extended play.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKC)s can usually get along well with other pets. With proper socialization, they typically have an easygoing and gentle temperament, so they tend to adjust well to a family setting and can interact with other animals in the household if properly introduced over time. To ensure that they are comfortable with other animals, it is important to introduce them to new things, environments, and other pets gradually and patiently. When properly adjusted to a home, CKC's can often times form strong bonds with other pets, particularly if they are introduced at a young age.
Training a Cavalier King Charles is the same as training any other dog breed. Start with the basics such as simple commands such as Sit and Down, and build up from there. Teaching basic obedience such as walking on a leash and good behavior in the home or in public is essential. It's beneficial to reward your pup with treats or praises when they obey a command. Try changing up the type of treats and commands you give to help keep their attention.
