Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a medium-sized breed of dog that originated in the United Kingdom. They were bred primarily as pets, and feature a silky, medium-length coat with a feathered texture. Their coat is usually white and chestnut in color, and is usually adorned with a pattern of black, tan, or ruby. The Cavalier is a cheerful dog with a loving and affectionate personality. They often form strong bonds with their owners and are known to have an easy-going and playful temperament.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered to be a low-shedding dog breed. Although they do shed some, it is not an excessive amount and is generally more of the light, fluffy undercoat shedding seasonally. Because of their longer hair, brushing is recommended to keep it from matting and remove dead fur. Regular baths and trips to the groomers may also be necessary. On average, you should expect to find some shed fur on their beddings, but they will not make your entire house covered in dog hair.
Feeding a Cavalier King Charles the wrong diet can be very detrimental to their health. It is important to know exactly what they can and can't eat as too much of the wrong food can lead to obesity and nutritional deficiencies. Generally speaking, you should not feed your Cavalier King Charles human food or food designed for other animals, as some foods can be toxic and even fatal to them. It is also important to avoid giving them table scraps, high-fat foods, bones, snacks made for humans, and the like.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, it's essential to invest in food and water dishes, a collar, toy and treats, a bed, a crate, health and grooming supplies, and, most importantly, a trustworthy veterinarian. Additionally, you should pick up some basics such as a lead and to get your pup familiar with your home start with simple obedience and house training items. It's also wise to factor in training and activity expenses. Remember that your pup's taste might have changed as he grows, so picking out supplies beforehand might have to be updated a few times.
Cavalier King Charles come in the four standard size categories of Toy, Miniature, Intermediate, and Standard. The Toy breed Cavaliers usually weigh between 4 and 11 pounds and have a height of 8-10 inches. Miniature breed Cavaliers typically weigh between 12 and 15 pounds and have a height of 10-13 inches. Intermediate breed Cavaliers usually weigh between 16 and 18 pounds and have a height of 14-15 inches. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels absolutely love to swim! They have a natural affinity for the water due to their water-loving personalities. Their thick double coat makes them quite buoyant, allowing them to move quickly and efficiently through the water. Not only that, but their eyes are designed to help them see clearly underwater. They love to play in the water or go for a leisurely paddle in the lake or pond.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are an ideal choice for first-time owners. They are friendly and affectionate by nature, making them a great addition to homes of all sizes. The breed is not overly active, so they require less exercise than some other breeds, making them a great choice for busy lifestyles. Cavaliers are also quite easy to train and are happy to learn basic commands. As long as you are an owner that provides enough patience, love, and discipline, a Cavalier King Charles is low-maintenance and can make an excellent first pet.
Training a Cavalier King Charles is relatively easy due to their eagerness to please their owners. They do best with positive reinforcement such as verbal praise and treats. Begin with short, daily training sessions and make sure to keep the commands brief and consistent. Start with basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, come, and leave it. Make sure to stay patient and practice these commands frequently. It can also be beneficial to use doggy puzzles and toys as a way to stimulate the mind and provide your pet with mental challenges.
