Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small dog breed that originated in England in the 16th century. They are distinguished by their adorable "teddy-bear" face, silky long hair, and gait like a horse. This breed is an incredibly loving, affectionate, gentle, and intelligent companion. They enjoy being active, walks being a favorite activity. However, they thrive on just being around their family and find more joy in cuddles. They are one of the most popular toy breed companion dogs, being loyal and a great source of joy around the home.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are said to be a hypoallergenic breed, however this is not always the case. While this breed does have a non-shedding coat, they still produce the common triggers for allergy sufferers. These triggers are caused by proteins contained in the pet's saliva, urine and dander, which can cause excessive sneezing and chronic skin irritation. Some people with allergies may also suffer irritation from pet fur, and Cavaliers do have a moderate amount of fur. In addition, they have a profuse amount of facial hair.
A balanced diet is important to a Cavalier King Charles' overall health and wellbeing. Providing them with a diet that contains high-quality, low-fat proteins helps to maintain their muscular development. Additionally, carbohydrates like whole grains provide them with energy and essential vitamins and minerals. Omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in salmon and other fatty fish, can help boost their immune system, and a variety of fruits and vegetables offer essential vitamins and minerals. As treats, some rawhide or chews are suitable options.
Prior to welcoming your new Cavalier King Charles into your home, it is important to prepare. While it may be easy to get carried away buying supplies for your pup, make sure to start with the basics. Invest in food, bowls, treats and toys to suit their age and breed. Ensure you have a comfy bed for them to sleep in, and the necessary cleaning materials for messes they may have. It is also important to plan for socialization, exercise, training and veterinary care to ensure that your Cavalier King Charles will have a healthy and safe life with you.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a toy-size breed, generally ranging in size from 12-13 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 13-18 pounds. Depending on bloodlines, there are a few individuals who may be slightly larger. Although their size remains relatively consistent among the breed, there are two distinct coat types that serve to further distinguish the breed's overall appearance. Blenheim Cavaliers have both red and white markings, while the other, the Tricolor, is predominantly black and white with tan accents.
It is recommended that Cavalier King Charles should get around 30 minutes of exercise daily. To get the maximum benefit from your walks, it's best to aim for longer walks of 45 to 60 minutes once or twice a week. Try to break up these walks into several shorter walks over the day. This will give your dog a chance to enjoy the sun and explore new smells as part of his exercise. Additionally, you can vary the walking routes to give your dog a chance to experience different new scenery and activities.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels make wonderful first-time pets! They are known for being loyal, affectionate, and intelligent with a gentle nature. They require plenty of love, exercise, training, and vet visits, so it is important that first-time owners are prepared to devote time to caring for them. Plus, they are small-medium sized dogs, meaning they are perfect for apartments and other small spaces. As long as the owner is committed to providing them with everything they need, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can make an excellent first-time pet!
The amount of time required for daily training of a Cavalier King Charles depends on the individual dog and its level of training. Generally, 10-15 minutes per day is recommended for a basic level of obedience, however, puppies may need slightly more depending on their development and energy level. Higher levels of obedience can require much more training time and, to reach competitive levels of obedience, dogs may require over 30 minutes of training per day. To achieve good training results, it's important to engage in regular, consistent routines and to not exceed the amount of training or exercise time recommended by your veterinarian.
